I'm having difficulty starting my 1950's Fordson Major E1A Diesel. It has a Simm's Injector pump and Simm's injectors. I have operated this tractor for many years with out problems. After normal operation I shut the tractor down and have not been able to get it started again. I have disassembles and cleaned every fuel component from the tank to each injector. I even went as far as to remove the valve cover and to remove each individual injector from the engine block and cleaned each very well. With a small shot of Starter Fluid I can get the tractor to run for a few seconds before it dies. An archived article mentioned "timing" and a component of or on the injector pump? Could this be my problem? I would appreciate any thoughts or suggestions anyone could make as I have completely no idea what to do at this point. Thanks.

I just finished starting my dads Super Major 2 days ago.
We had to bleed the injector pump by opening the small bleed screw on top of the pump.
I am not sure what kind of pump it was.
I would figure you would have to bleed the injector pump for starters

First question is: Is there air in the system? A good place to start if all filters have been changed, engine fires and runs, so not too much wrong with anything we hope....

I've cracked each metal line going to each injector ports separately then while cranking the engine I see fuel spaying out and I tighten the nut. Then I go to the next port and do the same thing. This is the procedure I've been using to bleed the air. Is there a different procedure I should use. Thanks for your help.

Regards: Scott

Yes, but does air come out as well, when you do this procedure? That is the important thing. If it does, and I suspect that is the case, either you have not cleared air from the system further back from the injector lines (pump and/or filter) or there is an air leak which needs tracking down and rectifying. That could be air drawn in by the lift pump (does it have one?) due to a restriction before it.
