Ford 530 square baler question

Back when we were square baling heavy oat straw, we broke a knotter frame. It broke where the worm gear shaft goes up thru it. I'm not sure what caused it to break - maybe the splice in the twine balls? The splice was right at the knife when we stopped- could it have snagged and caused this? I know I need to get a new knotter frame, but I'd like to know what caused it to break and what else to look for before I order parts . Thanks

The splice in the twing balls could not have caused that. It took a harder lick than that from a string. You may never know what caused it. This summer the knotter frame on my 311 New Holland broke. I have it fixed back but will never know why it broke. A 530 tuned right is a great old baler. Just fix it back and put it to work.

oh I forgot to tell you. You may only find parts for that baler at a salvage yard. I had one and 10 years ago I could not get new parts for it. There were 100's of those things around. You probably can easily find used parts for it somewhere.
