Assassin bugs can be large(2-3cm.)Usually grey. They"re triatomid or reduviid bugs. Also known as kissing bugs "cause they tend to bite around the mouth, eyes and face. They feed on blood, mostly feed at night. more common in western states.Live in hollow trees under bark and in eaves and roofs etc.Their bite is painful and people can be allergic. Not venomous though. More or less same bug as kills large numbers of people throughout Central/South America by transmitting Chagas disease( S.American trypanosomiasis.)Bug has the parasite and has diarrhea as well. It defecates constantly leaving trails wherever it walks(on the walls, for example). The feces contaminate the bite wound infecting the poor sap with trypanosomes. This is the most common cause of heart failure,I"m told,in S.America.Here they"re just a nuisance(so far as anyone knows!).

I've developed a strange reaction to yellowjacket stings over the past few years. The sting itself hurts for a few seconds, just like always, but the pain is gone within 30 seconds, there is no swelling, and within 15 minutes I can't even tell where I was stung. I do get kind of a warm feeling throughout my body, and the last one, I got a little irritable. Never any effect on breathing or throat, which I understand is the problem with those allergic. I'm thankful for the relief from the usual symptoms, of course (I used to "swell up like a poisoned pup" just like everybody else), but can't help wondering what's going on.

Mike, You better be careful, you might be in the early stages of becoming allergic. Dad had been stung for years by those nasty critters and one year he got into a nest while cutting a tree down. He didn"t swell much, but he got warm and very tired and just wanted to laydown. His color got bad and we packed him up in the car and headed for town. Doc said good thing you got him here quick because his heart rate had slowed way down. I guess when you are born you have a certain tolerance to stings and every sting gets you closer to not being able to take it anymore. Dad never goes to the woods anymore without his bee kit. You might want to go get an allergy test done so you know for sure.

Thanks for the reply. I was wondering whether that was the case. Will get a test done, then start carrying a bee kit, I guess.

Just did a google search for assassin bug and I have seen something like it in N.C.The poision is to digest their food before they eat it. Yellow jackets and ticks are what I fear.

What exactly do they look like? I am extremly afraid of hornets and wasp and any time I see a nest of calm hornets within reach them and Konk become best friends. Haven't gotten stung in a few years. Lately we've had these blue hornet looking things. Does anyone know what these are?

Hi, I have been stung by wellow jackets and red wasps
This is not fun. My solution is a mesquito jacket and pants set you can find at your local sporting store and they are cheap. They have draw string sleves and waistband. I also put on leather gloves and a hat to keep the netting from my face.Yes I look like someone from outer space but have not been stung in 3 years.Take can of wasp and hornet spray with you. You can go one on one with them.

I peeled the top off a nest of ground hornets while mowing along the road above the house several years ago with my John Deere H and #5 sicle bar mower. When I saw the black cloud boil out of the ground I realized my bad. I yanked the clutch back and the throttle back jumped and ran like h**l. (I'm allergic to bee stings) don't care much for the pain either. Got away without getting stung but the old H sat there idling for almost 2 hours at about a hundred RPM until it ran out of gas, bees surrounding it. Wife asked if I was afraid somebody would try to steal the tractor, told her it would be worth it to watch.
Along about 11:00 pm I took a can of gas up and started up the tractor and pulled it away then dumped some gas in the bee hole and lit an old rag from the tractor and solved the bee problem "Diehard style".

Here in S. Calif we have these wasp like things that live in the ground. While discing one time I ran over a hive, and I don't know it until I turned around and headed back. By the time I realized I have run over a nest they are all around me. The most times I have been stung at one time is around 4 times, and like you say it hurtes like heck for a long time. My eyes puff up like I have been in a fight. I just tell people who asked what happened, you should see the other guy. One time mowing I was swatting the things, and knocked my glasses off, and they went thuough my mower. Stan

Darn right it hurts. Many years ago my dad was climbing up to top of earcorn crib through a chute made for that purpose. He finished checking corn up in roof and was about to climb back down when he noticed wasps flying around top of chute. turns out there were 2 huge nests right above chute opening. He had disturbed them on his way up. That was the only way back down so he waited till they calmed down on there nest and quietly crawled back into chute only inches from them. Sure enough when he was in the chute unable to swing arms to defend himself they attact him. By time he got back down he was stung 7 times in neck and arms. As he was walking across yard to get weed sprayer and gasoline to go back and kill them nests he collapsed. Mother saw him lying in yard and called ambulance. Turns out he was allergick to wasp stings and never new it. Hauled him to hospital, throat swelled up and he was sufficating doctor said he won"t make it. Called Priest, gave him last rites, had family come to hospital to be with him when he died. We were there about 20 minutes when he started to come back. 6 hours later the doc sent him home with some shot kit he was supposed to take if he ever got stung again. Never needed to take the shot as from then on when he saw a wasp nest he would have one of us kids come over and spray it.He always had a dozen cans of Raid wasp and hornet killer scattered all over the farm and yes that stuff really works.

Found out I am allergic to bee stings the hard way. Got stung up at the barn loading up some horses one afternoon. Within 10 minutes I started feeling dizzy and hot - unloaded said horses. Walked to the house for water and passed clean out in the entry way. Woke up - it was dark and I had a pretty good rasberry on my chin and nose.
I keep the shots around everywhere now. Had food alergies as a kid, didn't have bee allergy until after 40. It is an over reation of the antihistamien glands. Same glands that make your eyes water and your nose run when you have a cold. Go figure. Any one experience "killer bees"?
