The difference in the engine is 45 has 1/2" longer stroke, more compression, and "power crater" pistons. All 45 blocks do not have the large bolt on side cover and the serial no. of the ingine will have a "45" in it. All 45s had curved shift levers. 45s have 43 hp, WDs 34.6. Later WDs had the curved shift lever. 45s also had a wider rim and larger size rear tire too. There are many other small differences that can be found by studying the parts book but these are the major ones, the main one being the engine which makes almost 25% more hp.

It all boils down to the serial number. 146607 and above is a WD45. Serial number is STAMPED on the left vertical face on the rear of the differential. Starts with WD. Late WD, 1952, had a curved shifter. Early 53 WD, mag was replaced with a distributor. WD45 came out in 53. WD45 engine has solid right side, no bolt-on plate. Longer crank throw, higher governed speed, thus more hp. Standard size rear wheels were wider on the WD45.

WD has a straight gear shift lever and WD45 has a curved shifter. Think the 45 might have a few more HP. Chris

I could be wrong, but as far as I thought they were the same. Just the WD 45 was a newer version. Like I said that could be wrong. Doug N

If you have the serial # look it up here. Click on the serial #'s on the left of this page. If you don't know where it is, post on the Allis board, cause I have no idea where they are. I don't know too much about A/C. Doug N

The wd or wd45 should be on rear housing by the inspection plate on the tractor. Basically on the housing of the rear end. Most wd45's had wide front ends on them and very few wd's did.

"Most wd45's had wide front ends on them and very few wd's did." That depends, on the area. In our neighberhood all the new WD45s were narrow front.

Yeah, I agree, all of the WD 45's I've seen in my area are tricylcles. Doug N

WD is 34HP most will have the stright shifter and a true WD engine has the bolt on plate on the right hand side. WD45 is around 43HP has a little curve to the shifter and doesn't have a bolt on plate on the right hand side of the engine. Now then there are a liot of mutt tractors out there that have the WD engine in a WD45 tractor or the WD45 engine in the WD tractor. Either engine will bolt right in and if you don't know all the stuff to look at you can find you have a tractor built form parts
