I have a Minn. Moline Model M670 that I use to bale hay with and as luck would have it, I have hay down and an ailing tractor!

I need some opinions as to how I should go about diagnosing my tractor.

It was a perfect runner until about two weeks ago it sputtered and back fired exactly like it was starving for fuel. Then it ran good for another hour, then it did the same thing, ran fine for another hour then it died. I had to choke it extensively to get it to restart, then it onlt ran for about one minute and died and refused to restart.
I thought it might have been icing so I let it sit until the next morning, started after hard choking, then it died after one minute. It will pull itself about 30 yards or run for one or two minutes, then it acts like it is out of fuel, only it doesn't backfire anymore.
I checked the tank, it is nearly full, then I checked the lines to the filter, they are fine, then I took out the filter, it is in good condition, then I took out the diaphram and it looked used but good I determined that fuel was reahinh the needle valve and all is good here. I then checked all of the lines leading to the carb, they are good. I took apart the carb and cleaned it and checked the little diaphram, it is good. I then replaced the big diaphram on the vaporizer unit for good measure, no improvement.
I then checked for spark and point gap, all is good here also.
If it were electrical, why would it start and run strong before it dies?
I cannot find any reason why it should not be getting fuel. I have used this tractor extensively in the past with absolutely no problems. Any help you could give me will be appreciated as I am stumped!

Like said below check the coil. Check immediately after it dies for a hot blue spark and if none or weak you know it's a bad coil. Dirt dobbers and spiders plug up vents on regulator too as said but also check air intake and air cleaner for build up or plugging. Had a Ford 2000 LP give me fits and it was just a broken governor spring on it so check all your carb and govnernor linkage too. You said lines were good so I guess you took them loose to check for flow and that a hose isn't collapsed? If you open valves too fast a bad safety disk can slam shut cutting flow off but that doesn't happen too often. It does really have enough fuel and guage isn't broke?

Thanks for all of the replies. I did not check the air cleaner for a clog, but the tractor dies the same when the intake tube is removed from the carb.
I did not check the coil and the wires are old.
I will replace the wires.
The coil it now has looks to be new as the paint is shiney, the part numbers nice and bright and no old dirt build up on it. It is very possible that the previous owner put this coli on right before I bought the tractor at auction to get it to run and put on a cheap universal automotive coil and this coil has failed, so I will replace the coil also for good measure.

As far as mud dobbers closing up the vent hole on the regulator, I have not checked that. Where is this vent located on an Ensign system?

When you get all figured out come over and see if you can get the Propane forklift I have to run. I have never worked on any these systems and do not have a book maybe I should get that mag too.

There's an excellent article about propane fuel systems in the new Oliver Heritage magazine that just came out. It applies to Oliver specificaly, but I would think it would apply in general terms too. Available at TSC stores.

My Dad had a propane combine that acted somewhat similar to your tractor only it would run a little longer before it would lose power and die. We went down the same road as you. Finally hired a mechanic to come out because harvest was ready (only time I remember my Dad hired someone to come out) and it turned out to be spark plug wires. I agree with the same line as Allan, check ignition system. The coil or condenser can give good spark at first then fail. And the spark plug wires also. If you really need the tractor replace it all; cap, rotor, wires, points, condenser and coil.

Have you tried a different coil?

I had a MM G706 not getting propane once and the cause was dirt dobbers stopped the vent hole on the back of the regulator. hope that is your problem, it is simple to clean out and let reg. breath. Scottz
