Just curious how much milk/milk replacer some of you feed calves from 4 days to 5 weeks, currently I am feeding 2 quarts, twice a day. Free choice starter and water. They seem thin, but plenty healthy,I"ve been told by some to stick to the 1 gallon a day so they increase their starter intake, others say I should be increasing the milk per feeding or feed 3 times a day at 2 quarts each. What are you practice"s?

These are the instructions for feeding calves from the local dairy farmer that makes milk replacer.
Days----- ----- --Solution(litres)
1-4----- ----- ---1.5
5-10----- ----- --2.0
11-15----- ----- -2.5
16-38----- ----- -3.0
39 until----- ----3.0
eating 1 kg of solid feed a day. Then wean off milk. We mix at a 1:5 ratio. 1 part replacer to 5 parts milk i.e.-1 gallon of replacer for a 5 gallon pail of water

We used to feed 2 litres from start to finish but have since started using the method above and it will get the calves out of the hutches up to 2 weeks earlier. If your not trying to get them in and out then 2 litres will work quite fine.Like Allan said you can make them to drink out of the pail from day 1. The first morning is a bugger but they get the hang of it pretty quickly.

Another "For what it's worth", Dave.

Ya don't have to use those nipples, bottles and/or nippled-buckets either.

They'll drink from an open bucket right from the get go. Gotta use your fingers in their mouths and stick their heads down in the bucket of milk replacer the first feeding or two. They learn to direct drink real fast.

I'm with the other guys. Get 'em on feed quick. It'll save you that expensive milk replacer.

Yep, I second that motion. Allan's method works very well.

Beats having them buck the bottle and getting you in the crotch!

We're all cow calf now,so feeding holsteins is a thing of the past, but for what it's worth on the bottle or nipple thing....my uncle used to work for Carnation. He showed me one time how much milk replacer seperated and was left on the bottom of the pail from pail feeding. Recomended a bottle or nipple pail to get all the solids in to the calf. Had a neighbor complaining once that he was loosing calves. Said they were thin and looked like they were starving to death. He was buying the cheapest lowest fat TSC milk replacer he could get, then on top of that,he didn't read the instructions on the bag,was using one measure of milk replacer per calf, label called for 2 for holsteins.

Some will, some won't. I milked cows for 35 years. Grew up with them before I started doing it myself. I've had calves that you needed an extra pail for. Set it in to them and go feed the rest while the pain in the neck blew bubbles and played with it.

Chris is right .
We raised Holstein bull calves for years . What I found to work best is to get them on full feed as soon as possible . I used a " Braden Bottle " It is a plastic bottle you hang in the pin . It holds dry pelleted feed . When a calf is done with its bottle it will suck on the feed bottle and get some feed . The sooner you get feed through a calf the lot less health problems ( like scours ) you will have .
Be sure to check their navel often .
I would put a Holstein on full feed at 3 days old . I never let them run out and sold 1300 lb . calves at 13 months

Nope, just been about 20 years since I raised dairy steers. Are there any recommended shots for them to recieve. Some say no.
