My one son has the task of checking each day for press releases from his employers customers. This one stated that Cat is looking at building both Cat & Perkins engines in China for future trade in Asia. There are some details to be worked out, but it will probably happen. J.

Just looked at a new Case IH combine. They now have an Iveco engine in them instead of the American born and bred Case-Cummins. The big tractors are next to lose the CDC engine I was told. Stands to reason since our (American) companies are owned by foreign companies now. Our neighbor bought a Cat combine with a 40' header and has since learned they don't stock many parts at the local dealer and if the warehouse doesn't have it, it can be many days to get a part from across the pond while your crop is exposed to weather and the neighbors farm circles around you. Progress?

It bothered me seeing all this stuff coming in from other countries until looked at the fact that we are at full employment. If we bring all this stuff over here to build we will have to bring the millions of people with it to do the work.
I guess we could do that that but then where will they all live. If we just bring the work back who will do it, yes the boy down the street would like abetter job but then someone wil have to fill job so more people will have to be imported right along with all those jobs.
I think maybe I will just buy what I can and not get to worried about where it comes from. The best car I ever owned was made in Sweden by trolls and the worst was made here by good union people.

Aloha, In the beginning, I always blamed the foreign countries for the lousy parts that we get. After thinking about it, I come to the conclusion that it is not their fault but the fault of the USA companies that supplied the specs. for the product. If they wanted good parts, then they would have specified how the part should be made. It seems that the specs. they supplied was lousy to begin (to cut costs)and with the cheap labor, they would make way more money than if it was made in the USA. Yep, they are laughing all the way to the bank because we are blaming the foreign country that made the product by the specs. provided by the USA Company. To save on the fines from the EPA, they moved everything to foreign countries so now, all the pollution is over there, but what goes around comes around.

Mahalo,

I really think it's all about labor cost. China has very low cost - under $1 per hour. It cost more for lights and toliet paper in a US plant than to run a whole factory in china. Michigan tried to keep a compressor plant from moving to Mexico last year. The state offered 80 million, plus offered to build a new factory for the company. The corporation turned it down, the labor savings was 40 million per year. It's kind of like blood in the water to a shark, once a company starts outsourcing, it just snowballs. Cheap labor can cover up a lot of management idiocy.

Perkins has already licensed some of their engines being built in India that are in the new MF tractors.

Don't forget the little B Cummins motors have been made in India for a long time.

The B is NOT made in India. The rocker arms are, but the main components (blocks, heads, etc.) are machined in Indiana and assembled and tested at CMEP just South of Columbus Indiana.

Most likely Cat will make the engines they sell in Asia in Asia and make the ones the sell in the US in the US. Cummins manufactures their engines in the same general area that they are used with the exception of the High Horsepower engines.

I work at a cat dealer. It is pretty bad when we can't get parts for current truck engines sometimes because they are across "the big pond". A good majority of Cat's business isn't just in the USA. We get lots of parts with china, brazil, mexico, stamped on them. Then we wonder why we have so many problems with these parts.
