I have a 69 case 530CK backhoe. While using the hoe I heard my motor start to cough and run kinda rough and not sounding so healthy. At this point It thought It may be running low on fuel so I got off and shut her down. I got about 10 feet away and heard a loud BOOM like a shotgun. and saw something shoot up. It was the dipstick! Whitish smoke was coming out of the breather and the dipstick tube. I was at a complete shock. I checked the oil , and it was about a quart down, but no more. So I Put in a quart checked it again. I then started it up and it ran fine. But the next day I tried it out and she seized up.To make a long story short Is this machine worth having the motor rebuilt?

Mike; I think Allan is likely right....so you are looking at not only sleeves, pistons and brgs but also removing the crank and having it turned. You didn't say what kind of shape the rest of the machine is in. If the rest of it is in decent shape it worth fixing...if it isrough than maybe you are in the useed parts business!

That's one drawback of a diesel. The darned things will absolutely run themselves into the ground and a guy forgets to renew the crank bearings.

Sounds like it spun a journal, the hot metal ignited the vent gases in the crankcase and we had a mini explosion.

Did ya hear it "squeaking" as you were cranking?

Allan
