I`ve got a Chevy 1 ton with a 12 ft. midwest bed . The rearend is geared high which is fine out on the road but granny gear is even to fast out in the hay field and other offroad jobs , up and down hills , haulin wood and post . Is there a 2 speed gear box that could be used to slow it down . I`m thinking about somthing that would mount inplace of the carrier bearing . Would`nt need to be able to shift on the move like with a 2 speed rearend . Binlaw put a 4 wheel drive transfer case in one to get a low range but I realy dont want to go that direction and dont want to change rearends . Whats out there ?

There are several companies that make overdrive and underdrive units that mount at the rear of the transfercase (for 4WDs) or the rear of the transmission (for 2WDs). They are very expensive though - and for 4WDs - they only work in 2WD.
If your truck has the Muncie heavy duty four-speed trans though - Ranger makes a special unit that mounts in-between the transmission and bellhousing. Since it's at the trans. input, it works in 2WD and 4WD. The Ranger "Torque Splitter" is available from Advance Adapters and comes with either a 27% overdrive or a 17% underdrive.

Say Demaris: Where you been? I've missed your Knowledgeable input on this forum.Last time I viewed your comments I believe snow was on the ground. Have you inclosed that Shed yet? Snow is not to far off. My Son in Colorado on the west side of Pikes Peak says weather is getting real cool there. Labor Day Snow Squall is not uncommon. Won't Stick but by Oct. 1'st. maybe!

If it is FWD you could put it in low range....

Somthing like that would work good , I think you and Old are talking about the samthing but I`d like to find somthing simpler like just 2 speeds in a smaller box with a cable shift mounted in the drive line but I dont know if what I want is out there .

I've heard of guys putting in hydra-power and Hydraul-Shift units out of 4 digit Olivers. The hydraul is a under/direct/over, and the hydra-power is under/direct. Shift on the fly with a handle or knob of some sort.

like a "doug nash 2 speed"? i think mile marker made them also. probably not stout enough, but a gear vendors unit would be, but big $

Look around at some of the truck junk yards and see if you can find an old twin stick truck. They have an aux. tranny in them and ya it would be more gears then you want but would work well. Plus most of them had 4th as an over drive and 3rd 1 to 1 and then you would also have the 2 lower gears to play with also. 16 speeds can come in handy at times. I have been thinking about doing that to a 1969 chev 3/4 ton but just haven't had the time to do so. I have 4 of those trannys laying around any how
