Off topic but there's a lot of knowledge on here.

I've got an '04 Dodge 2500, 4X4, Automatic with 5.7 Hemi. 75,000 miles. It was running fine, then as we were going along about 60 mph, it got a vibration. That ended up being a bad engine miss. It won't idle, and dies unless I keep rpms up above 1000. Hard to safely stop (power brakes/power steering)

No shops open in our town after noon. Stopped in an Advance Auto and had them hook up their diagnostic computer here's the codes I got.

DTC (Codes)

P0300
Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected

P0301
Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected

P0113
IAT Sensor ! Misfire Detected

P0340
Camshaft Position Sensor A - Bank 1 Curcuit Malfunction

P0335
Crankshaft Position Sensor A Circuit Malfunction

DTC Pending (codes)
P0300 Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected

P0301
Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected

*These codes indicate a malfunction in certain systems or components. Proper diagnosis should be performed by a mechanic or through prper diagnostics outlined in the service manual for your vehicle*

Any clues?

A friend who was a dealer mechanic at a Ddge dealership (albiet transmissions) suggested, and I changed all 8 coil packs and all 16 spark plugs. (yes, 2 per cylinder) No change in how it runs or the codes.

TIA

Follow-up;

Valve cover is off. #1 intake valve spring broke. Did NOT hit piston! Valves sealed when cylinder aired up. Holds compression. Valve spring is $11.00. Labor is $260. Entire bill should stay under $300. Will be ready by 5PM. Work will be done bt A.S.E. mechanic, former Dodge dealership tech, warranty on work.

Back on the road again.

The news just keeps getting better. Truck is done. It went a lot quicker than expected. Total bill will be $254.40.

You have a broken valve spring on the #1 cylinder. Common problem on the Hemi"s.

You're absolutely right about the #1 cylinder breaking a valve spring. Didn't drop. I'm HOPING it seals with a new spring. Truck is an '04 built in late '03. Hemi valve springs broke like eggs in '03 production run motors. Dodge claims that's past history. 7 year/70,000 mile warranty. Springs break on average @ 75,000 miles. Mine has 74,800.

Spring is $10. Labor to replace along with gaskets/ect, $450. If valve doesn't seal and head comes off, numbers grow substancially.

Bad Crankshaft Position Sensor? Have a experanced mechanic diagnose the problem. Much cheaper than throwing new parts at it.

Plugs came out yesterday @ 74,800 miles and looked like new. Dealer mechanic says Hemi plugs go 80,000 to 90,000 in work trucks, over 100,000 in play trucks. I replaced them with Bosch Platinum.(Their top of the line plugs) $7.95 each

Well, you better tell Dodge, Champion, Denso, NGK, Bosch, and anyone else who'll listen to you. They ALL spec the same plugs, and the Bosch Platinum are THE MOST EXPENSIVE, and all are fairly common plugs. Someone gave you some bad information

There is a local mechanic that has a show every saturday on a local station and he was just talking about hemi plugs this past weekend , and he came up with some wild name for the plugs a hemi takes . Send him an email at
askthemechanicspringfield.com

this guy is pretty sharp and he now does most all of my more troublesome repairs .

I'm in a Hemi truck/SUV owners club with 6500 members nationwide. I've got all sorts of info through them, as well as through a mechanic that's changing the valve spring for me. I was told not to even spend the "big bucks" on the Bosch Platinum. It seems the best performance is from the OEM Champions. They last longer, run better, and get better fuel milage. They're less than $6.00 each.

You'll here all sorts of techno-wonders from everyone, but the best info comes from people who actually run Hemi's. A great many of the club members race, or at the very least, spend hours and cubic dollars chasing hp. Almost to a person, they say "cheap" Champions are the way to go. (This from a "Champion plug hater")
