OT---There's a market for any type of service...

Twice in the past few weeks I've seen signs for a new service being offered in and around Charlotte. Believe it or not it's guys going around cleaning up "pet poop". The sign I saw today proclaimed "Your pets #2 is our #1" and gave a number. The one I saw the other day said something equally as humerous and was part of a company logo on the tailgate of a pickup. Personally my dog usually goes in the woods when he's running free or at least has the sense to go to the far end of his run before going when he's chained up. Granted I see the occasional pile here and there but with the heat they dry out and disappear pretty quickly and with a little rain simply disolve into fertalizer. I don't know, maybe if I had a couple of Great Danes in a small fenced yard I'd have to shovel on occasion but I'd have never figured there would be enough business (pun intended) out there to warrant at least two companies, that I know of, taking care of it. Just goes to prove there is a call for just about any type of service and as a result always work out there if your willing. Just hope the guys running these companies are already married because it would be hard to pick up women when you had to tell them your job was a "pet poop picker upper.... technician".

Hi all, My son is in the garbage buisness and you all would not believe what he finds, and yes there is a obesity problem in this country also a lazy crisis it seems like nobody wants to do physical labor even for a good wage. I guess I am not surprized when I see hispanic labor doing outdoor work. Sorry for the rambling, Thanks for reading, listening. John

I had a buddy that wanted to get into scrap iron haul'n. Put an add in the paper. "Wanted Junk Cars Cash Paid", got no calls. Changed it to "Will remove junk cars for $50". Phone rang off the hook.

Wayne, the worst part of that is that they are probably making as much as us guys that have a fortune invested in their equipment.. Instead of your 1/4 million invested in a service truck, or my machine shop, all they need is an 500 dollar car, and a Super Dooper Pooper Scooper ordered from the back of Outdoor Life, and they are in business..

I cant see paying for that particular service thats why I got kids, lol. Seriously, I cant stand dog crap in the yard and neither can my significant other. Attracts all kinds of riff raff (like the neighbors dogs). Thats one of her kids chores, every day to collect the dog crap and put it in the herbie. I will conceed that it wasnt anything I had to deal with here at the farm but on a 1/4 acre lot I sure dont want to be smelling it.

5 will get you 10 the picker uppers are from the other side of the Rio Grande. I saw a new business tonight on the news. Place called 1-800-got-junk. They showed a crew cleaning out a garage size "U store it" rental unit. The lady who owned the stuff has been renting that unit for 20 years! On top of that she paid these guys $400 to haul it off. They took some stuff to goodwill and some to the recyclers and the rest to the dump. There were a lot of boxes they threw in and never even looked in them. If those guys were smart they would open up a flea market , sell the stuff back to the pack rats and get paid to clean out the storage building again. Ummm I might have hit on something there! OK never mind!

1-800-gotjunk is a nationwide service. They had problably already gone through those boxes, but who knows. Sure, having a flea market might get you a couple of extra bucks, but they're already getting a good price for hauling all that stuff off and they might have a tougher time getting jobs if the folks knew they were not only charging them a big price to take it away, but were also turning around and making a good profit on it. Some people have an awful time dealing with excess stuff they're not using, they just can't bring themselves to dispose of it themselves, so I have even heard of folks buying 2nd homes just to store their "junk" in. Services like 1-800-gotjunk are needed, and there is private individuals who take out ads in the papers for "attic cleaning", etc... Its amazing how quickly clutter can pile up in American life, we use and go through so many products, and if stuff isn't leaving your household as fast as its coming in, your on your way to needing 1-800-gotjunk.

Yep , it is a vicious cycle. Those guys could get around the people not wanting it resold, by giving it to a subsidiary company called 1-800 wegotstuff. Some of the boxes they tossed in the truck were sealed shut with the paper box tape so they may have never been opened unless they just happen to have a paper tape dispencer in the storage unit. From the size of the pile, they might have! I have cleaned out 2 old ladys houses here in town for the relatives. They went through and took everything they wanted and told me I could do what ever I wanted with the rest, sell it, donate it, or take to dump. I did all three. They were in a hurry to get the houses sold since they don"t live here anymore. I have another one to do soon also. Complete house with everything in it. It was his Grandmas house but he wants it gone but wants me to split the money with him, not bad deal If I could get it to an area that has money. people here are broke except at the first of the month. His Grandma drove herself to the hospital one day and didn"t come home.House and garage with contents could be bought for 20,000.

There is a man here that buys most of the storage units that go at auction. He has people working for him, that sell at all the local flea markets. From what I hear, he is doing quite well..

Must be for city folks who live in tight quarters with their neighbors. Citys are full of problems, always people whining about everything, so I can see people complaining about the neighbor's dog poo and people are getting lazier all the time. Theres folks out there that are looking to pay someone else to do everything for them if they can afford it. personally I don't see how anyone could possibly find enough paying customers to earn any sort of living as a pet poo technician. How much would you even charge for that?, just the expense of getting to a customers house would be expensive, and then to make any profit you'd really have to charge. but sometimes bizarre ideas end up going big. I'd imagine some folks hate putting poo in the trash because then their trash stinks. Interesting idea.

I am a landscaper in NY in the suburbs of long island and I offer poo cleanup for the price of five dollars a week in addition to their lawn bill which is anywhere between 25 and 65 dollars a week. So I think I'm doing pretty well picking up "crap" in the city(as a city person). Oh yeah, and as a full time job, I'm a teacher so I'm pretty sure I'm doing very well.

Since you are already there for the lawn, it would be easy to charge a little extra for poo pickup, but just think of what you would have to charge if you had to make special trips just for poo?, which is what this business in the original post seemed to be doing.
