I just pick up a 68 JD 112 with the above engine in it. It smokes a little but was told by previous owner that the rings are good and he ground the valves. My question is this, is there an oil additive that can help in seating the rings and valves? This engine was never broken in when new. Has sat since around 1970. Thanks

When mine broke the rod cap and then bent the rod at 90 degrees as many Tecumseh's do, I found the cylinder was barrel shaped and oval. Would have needed a lot of rebore and only JD had the large oversize piston and rings. Add a new rod and they wanted $179. I bought a Briggs engine from an engine warehouse, but I kept all the Tecumseh parts in case it might be restored someday. In the mean time I mow the yard on much less fuel than the Tecumseh ever used (and it had a new short block according to the dealer when I bought it).

"was told by previous owner that the rings are good"

What did he base that statement on????

Even if the rings are "good", they won't seal properly if the bore is tapered from top to bottom, or "egg-shaped. Or, if the ring grooves in the piston are worn.

He tore the engine down to rebuild it and seen that there was no need. So he ground the valves so they would seat better and reassembled it. This engine is said to have less than 200 hrs on it by original owner.

Is that an old round fendered 112? Any interest in selling it? My boys both have round fender 110's. My daughter wants a 112 round fender.

Sorry, that ad I referenced is for a square fender. I didn't know what the round fenders looked like until I found one in the photo gallery. That one is pretty neat. A '66 round fender with a bright red diesel engine.

Check out photo ad #183303. It's right up your alley. Owner has been using it for pulling. Comes complete with wheel weights and wheelie bars. $750 cheap.

Didn't John Deere sell a powder for introducing in the air stream to seat rings along about time of the 4020 tractors?

Yes for early 4020 Deere did sell a ring seating powder. And later in the 4020 production their service bulletins decided that was a bad idea (chrome rings probably) and said don't do it any more.
