Alright, all this knowledge out here and I need some of it. I’m going to build a drag to level out some small fields. The previous owners had Lama’s and they dug beds all over the fields from 4’ – 6’ across and from 1'to 2’ deep; I need to fill them in. I’m in central Oregon and the soil is a sandy loam with LOTS of rocks. I’m working the ground with a 5’ Rotatiller and want to pull a 6’ wide drag to help smooth out the fields.

I’m planning on building it out of lumber. 40 years ago, Dad had a drag he pulled behind a disc to level out our philbert orchard; it worked good but I’m not sure if it would level very well. It’s design was, 6) 4”x10” planks overlapping each other like a staircase, this left the ground very smooth but we did not have any rocks and the soil was a loam type.

So what type do you recommend I build? THANKS for any input. Paul Kingsbury

Why not just find an old spring tooth drag and use it and for get about this building nonsense. If not smooth enough or level enough drive cornerways across the field. If it needs more than this. You'll need a land leveler or (plane)to drag the holes full.

Wish I could help more, anyway, Ive been very impressed with the 4x4 drag I got from TSC, but I would but the 8x8 if I were to do it again.

I have a piece of 10" I beam that would do you a fine job.Hook it short for small cuts and hook it long for better penetration.Have used it for grading yards over the years. Have seen nothing work better, even a graderbox.

Take two six foot scrap I beams 6"Wide flange are best, and a single railroad tie. Cut crossways grooves in the railroad tie to set the flanges in at an angle of 30 degrees from each other so that they are close together at the right, and farther apart at the left. Bolt them to the tie and pull from one end of the tie. JimN

I have a picture of a "leveler" that was saved from this site. It utilizes three pieces of channel iron, the front piece has angled "wings" that collect rock, and is operated with a 3-point lift. I believe someone in Wales made it. The picture was saved on 5/2/07 so it may be in the archives.

If you would like the photo send me email

Two railroad ties with a Disk harrow spool between themon each side is what I use. I bored a hole through them and use an all thread to bolt them together and used a cable for the hitch. Email me and I will send a picture of it.

Hi George
Is two ties enough? Would it help/work better with 3 or 4 ties? Thanks, Paul

Georgeky has the right idea. I have used a large heavy log with an old spike tooth harrow and usually pull two 2 by 12 planks and load them up with rocks that pop up. Did this on a large 90 acre field on my SC farm and it worked great.

If out of lumber leave horizontal gaps between the boards bigger than the rocks, so they can pop up between the boards.
