Going to be 90 here today and last night I found no AC in my office. Started hunting around and found the condenser fan not running outside. Reached in with a screw driver and gave it a nudge to get it moving and it spun up OK and seemed to be making a dent in the room temperature when I went to bed. Got up this morning and it won't start spinning with another nudge.

System is a 1 ton split system heat pump by Trane. I would just pull the fan motor and go to the supply house, but notice on the wiring diagram that this motor also has a seperate starting capacitor. How can I diagnose whether it is the motor or the capacitor? System is making the condenser coil awfully hot so it seems to be working otherwise although it is probably on its last legs at ~10 years old. Just wondering if it makes sense to try to keep it running or call somebody to do the replacement.

Thanks,

Kirk

Well since you could spin it up the way you did theres about a 95% chance its the cap. Just had that happen a few weeks ago on my home A/C unit then a week later the compressor went out. So far it has cost me $4800 to replace the whole unit but I did up grade to a heat pump. Now my wife is complaining its to cold in the house. Last week she complained it was to hot. Guess theres no pleaseing some people LOL. Oh by the way it was 104 yesterday and there talking it will be hotter today

I had a bad capacitor about a month ago. On my unit the capacitor had three terminals on top. This single capacitor ran the condenser and the fan motor. Some units have seperate capacitors. I would take the cover off and locate the capacitor/s. If you see that the case of the capacitor looks bulged outward it is most likely bad. I took mine to the local electric shop and they tested it to confirm it was bad.

Kirk,

I just went through the exact same thing a couple months ago. This unit in my home is only about 5 years old. The bearings went in the fan motor. I called the man who installed it and his first reaction was the start capacitor.....I told him i thought the bearings because the blade didn't spin easily. Anyway...it was the bearings and a new motor cured the problem.....$90 installed.

One of my first thoughts as well. I also pulled the top cover last night (after pulling the disconnect) and gave the fan a spin to see if it was free. Spun nice and smooth.

Start cap then. Unless some windings are fried.
