i have a question about oil pressure in an engine. when thes low pressure, i know that means it's wearing out. but whats wearing out? pistons, rings, bearings? the reason i ask is because i know a guy with a farmall C for $850 and claims it has suspicoisly low oil pressure so i want to know what i'd be getting into here

It's one of those things you just can't tell until you get into it; besides the above, rarer possibilities are too thin or too-long unchanged oil for usage, prematurely worn oil pump, restricted flow somewhere or restricted oil pump intake, , bad sending or receiving unit if gauge is electric. But to be on the safe side you have to price it on the most expensive repair. You might look carefully to see if the engine looks like it's been apart or pan dropped (engine too clean? new gasket edges showing? clean bolt heads?). The seller might actually know what it needs and thinks he'd lose by repairing it before he sold it. Good luck.

Worn rod, main, and cam bearings give away oil pressure as a general rule. But, the 113 and 123 IH engines are NOTORIOUS for warping the cover plate on the oil pump, and basically the oil shoots right out into the pan instead of going through the system. It is an easy fix.
