I sent you an e-mail It is a Hercules, long number is engine serial number. The numbers should have been stamped in the block on the side opposite the manifold side toward top of the block. J.

Brush the 1 some more and see if it"s an I: Herc built an IX3, a 4cyl. The IX series (per 49 bearing catalog) seems to"ve ranged from 21/2x4 to 31/4x4. John S is the expert, and can almost certainly positively ID it for you; the v-belt driven water pump sound fairly modern ("old" to me is teens-early 20"s, "middling" is mid 20"s-mid 30"s; everything else is "modern"!!-I"m showing my age). If John verifies your engine I"ll eyeball some of my stuff for uses.

If you post pix, and if the engine's just by itself, include something in the pix to show scale. If you can't post pix: is it smallish, medium, big? does it look old, middling, modern? carb updraft or down? Dist or mag, and where? tag on dist/mag, gen or strtr? what plugs are in it? (assume it's a vertical inline 4) block one piece, smooth sides, or shows rounded areas for cylinders? water pump or thermo-siphon? water pump, gen belt driven? If belt driven, V or flat? oil pan usual light metall or heavy cast piece? If fan there, looks old, middling, modern? Anything known/rumored about what it was in or used for or where it came from? Stuff like that. Fascinating!

How about a picture of the engine? No other casting numbers on the block? That is odd for an American built engine.

I checked a book called" The American gasoline engine" Has engine names from A-Z, No ASKE brand listed.
