hey guys, i found a john deere 4030 for sale for 6100 or best offer. in the add it says the tractor has been shedded and thats it. i was wondering if anyone has any "dirt" on the 4030"s or anything good to say about them. i heard that the use more fuel than a 4430. ive ran a 4430 before but not enough to get a feel for how much fuel it uses. thanks agian guys.

Jonathan,
I've got a 4030D open station that I bought this spring. Tach read 8200 hours and was broken. I spent some money on cosmetics and fixed the broken tach. I love the tractor for haying and all around farm-work. Tractor has some blow-by but doesn't use any oil. I've put about 100 hours on it already and really like it. Mine has the QR transmission. Seems to be a good tractor.

i run a 4030 and a 4430. the 4030 does alright but for heavy work im not too impressed with it. plowing with a 3 bottom jd 420 flip plow in B1. and when you hit a spot of heavy soil it bogs right down. i dont know, my grandfather's run a farmall 706 (70 hp) for years with a ih 70 4 bottom plow and it pulls like theres nothin behind it almost. and then theres the 4030 with 10 more hp and it doesnt like the 3 bottom. go figure. maybe this 4030 has problems i dunno? but i have heard that 4030's have been known for being short on power. it's a loud tractor too. if your gonna use it for haying or more lighter duty work the 4030 would be great. don't get me wrong i love that tractor but i just dispise plowing with it, everything else it does fine

Jonathan

Are you comparing tractors that are both diesel?

The 4030 has a 329 Cu. In. engine and developes maximum 80.33 horsepower on 5.62 gallons of diesel fuel.

4430 has 404 cubic inches and developes 125.88 horsepower on 8.09 gallons per hour.

These figures are from Nebraska tests numbers 1110 and 1111. These tractors are not in the same power category.

A typical 80 horsepower gas tractor at max power will burn about 7.5 gallons per hour under full load... Gene

I've had both a 4030 and a 4430. The 4030 has a 359 diesel like in a 6600 combine which is not supposed to last as long. It runs at higher rpm (2500). The 4430 has the 404 engine. Much better engine but uses quite alot more fuel. I really liked my 4030 and didn't have any problems with it. Nice small size. Good on fuel. Just guessing around 5 gallons a hour versus 8 to 10 for 4430. I'd buy it if I knew where it was as I would like to have another!
