What's the name and model (capacity?) of the compressor?. May have a catalog listing (if it's on a trailer look on the frame and the sheet metal for a tag).
My 36-49 Motor Trk/Trctr manual shows 6 truck JX variants, but not the original JX; no tractor JX's, but tractor coverage is pathetic. Bearing catalog seems to show JX and "early" JXA thru JXD were poured bearings, but gives no dates; says inserted JXA thru JXG "late models" as 34-43. 1957 Motor has 8 JX's, but has no make-model listings. Even if can't ID engine variant, should check some welder or compressor forums before scrapping. Good luck.

Bud: I thought you were a Hercules man!. JX is the basic engine. After that you have from one to 4 more letters. Last one is the code for the bore size. The ones in between are if it had a stroke crank (letter L) and then CC for counterclockwise rotaion( boat motor)

John: No, almost all my very limited knowledge comes from vacuuming up info from real experts; in the days I was driving these things it was just hit the starter or pull the comp release, then hit the starter, keep the gauges and rpm's within range and if it sounded funny take it to the shop. What I worked on was mostly family, which in those days always needed work--kinda the not-so-good old days--everything else is just fascinating letters and numbers on the printed page. Take care. Bud

I know some parts are real hard to find and are expensive. If it has 2 heads it might be worth more in my opion. I would try to part it out before scrapping it.

There are at least 4 basic models of hercules 6 cylinders. Does it have one cylinder head or two? Start there.

Sorry, Read the above posts but the QX slipped my mind. How long is your engine and do you have any block casting numbers?

It is a JX. Bore size will determine the last letter. Used a lot in military stuff.
