What was the chemical we used to "Set off" under the canvas to sterilize the soil before seeding plant beds? Aerosol cans in plastic holders. Is this chemical still available? How about tobacco canvas? If available, can anyone tell me where to start looking for it? Thanks very much.

Methyl bromide is not illegal yet; but the production of it is supposed to have ceased and whatever supply is left, is what there is to use. However it costs more every year. The place in Frankfort that sells it is called Hendrix & Dail (I think) and they come in 100 lb bottles. If you have the Kentucky Farmer Directory (a phonebook with farmers from all over the state) look up Roger Quarles in Georgetown. He is the only person that I know of that still gasses tobacco beds. I know because I worked for him in high school, and went with him to gas beds for people several times. As far as bed covers, I'd say Southern States should be able to get them.

Roger has gassed my beds for me a couple times with that old Allis Chalmers tractor. He does a good job. I bet if you google Roger something will come up. I have gassed mine myself the last couple years since I converted my Vorlex machine to MB. Roger still gasses for several farmers here in Mongomery County. That is the name of the place in Frankfort.

Actually Steven when the beds were fumigated plastic was used for the cover so the gas wouldn't escape. Cheese cloth or reemay was used after the beds were seeded. Been a long time.

I didn't read all of your post evidently. The Remay or Chix canvas are available from SS. If you can't find anything email me and I will give you some phone numbers to call. Ag-Wood 859-498-1999 in MT. Sterling Roger carries everything but the gas. We still have several farmers here using old fashion beds including myself.

Did not know any one put out beds anymore. My dad's brother was the last one to put out beds round here for years and he stoped two years ago. Last bed I had was in 98 and there were very few then. That was the year my grandfather died. I helped him with the last one and have been buy'n plants from then on. This year I am going to raise my own. Geting to be too big a hassel going to get plants and quality ain't what it used to be. Glad to here some one is still making a bed. What do you use to keep the weeds out?

Methyl Bromide and a pocket knife. I tried the float beds for 3 or 4 years and to me the beds are just plain easier. Once the float plants are gone they are gone. You can water beds and usually come up with more plants in case of an emergency There are several farmers here that still raise beds. They also seem to out weigh float plants and have a lot less suckers/water sprouts. Less disease and everything.

When I went to float plants I was only raising an acre and doing for my grand mother, did not have a stake in it. For just an acre I was better off to buy float plants for $200. Now I have 3 1/2 acres so it cost more but I have a care-a-sell or however you spell it setter, so I have to use them. For me it is worth it because that 5th person is always hard to come up with at setting time.

I have an old 2 row mechanical setter I use with either. I also have a 1 row carousel and 1 row conventional that I will probably have to use from now on as all my kids have moved off all but one and he works full time in town. I have 15 acres this year, but have raised as much as 180 acres several years back. The last big crop I raised was in 98 with 63 acres. It got to be too much trouble getting enough help for all that and expensive. I have been raising what me and the family can handle, but now that is going to change as well. I don't much care anymore. My place is paid for and I need more time to work on this junk anyhow. I don't know yet what I will do. Who knows I may put out 20 acres or none next year.

Methol Bromide is correct. It is still available. You have to buy a whole barrel of it now instead of the small 1 pound cans as they have been banned. You will have to go to Frankfort to get it and need a gassing machine and a license to use it. I will have to check on it, but we bought it last year. Some guy here in KY posted a topic back in the spring about a new spray on chemical for beds, but haven't heard back from him as to how well it worked. Call your county agent and he may know of something else.

There is a product not sure of the name. Farmers in my area use greenhouses now. If no one else replys contact Southern States, they can also help you locate cheese cloth and reemay. Horticulture suppliers should carry these items also.

We burned many a bed when I was a kid. Cut wood all winter for the job. I still have the old rack we used to do it with. I live in Montgomery now. What part of the county are you in. I am on the Clark/Montgomery line at Kiddville. Just off Nest Egg road.

I'm one mile from the Bourbon Co. line, off of Paris Pike. About 2 miles in behind Judy Drive-Inn.
