I am finishing the painting of a John Deere trator. Actually a bolt holds the front wheels on.

Does anyone have an idea on what can be done so the wrench doesn't knock the paint off the head of the bolt?

Is there something that a person can dip the head into that would stop rust so they wouldn't have to be painted?

I admit that I am a cheapskate, I don't want to buy new bolts from John Deere that may be rust resistant.

I don't remember where I heard or read it, but I recall something about baking them in the oven at 300 or 350 degrees for 15 minutes or something. Seems like I read it in a hot rod magazine, somebody wanted to paint all the bolts to match the engine and was asking how to keep them from chipping when he assembled it. Never tried it myself.

You shouldn't have painted the bolt. I never paint bolts until they're on the tractor. I just go over them twice with a fine artist's brush.

Wrap it in electrical tape. Use a 6 point socket and not a 12 pt.
