Climate and Drought Junk

The final statistics for St. Cloud during July 2007 are now in. They show a warm month, but nothing like the heat of the last two Julys. On the other hand, our growing season rainfall now ranks as the 7th driest growing season on record and only the second growing season this dry since the 1930's. You can find more details on the July 2007 St. Cloud weather summary and in the totals at the bottom of the forecast section.

The latest statewide summary of the drought from the State Climatology Office came out yesterday with links to the State Climatology Office Weekly Rainfall Map and a new DNR Waters Streamflow Report. The fire danger, as seen on the DNR Forestry/Fire Conditions page, continues to be very high from Long Prairie and Little Falls through the Twin Cities and in northeastern Minnesota. Lawn care tips can be found at the Minnesota DNR Waters lawn watering tips.

The National Drought Mitigation Center's Drought Monitor made headlines last week as a swath of Minnesota from the St. Croix River through St. Cloud, the Twin Cities, the lower Minnesota River Valley to Mankato, and reaching to the Iowa border was upgraded to severe drought conditions. You can also look at the NWS Chanhassen drought page, which will likely be updated today or Tuesday. The new Minnesota Weekly Crop Progress and Condition Report shows that 78% of farms are short of topsoil moisture and 76% of pasture are rated as poor or very poor. 37% of the corn crop are rated poor.

We're getting closer to the ragweed season, so the Saint Cloud pollen forecast from Pollen.com is running in the high end of the moderate rating in the 7's on a scale of 1 to 12. The dry conditions have kept this down for a while, but the peak season for ragweek is about two weeks away.

I hear ya, I live in Le Sueur county in south central Mn. and we are dry here too. A cloud went just to the south of us last night, and you could hear and smell the rain but only a drop here. The way it looks, the crops are shutting down and what rain we get from now on will only help for next year.

I'm by New Ulm. Missed every rain there was, same deal tonight. Thundered & lightened, got 4 drops I saw. West of me got 2 tenths or more.

1988 was worse, but not by much any more. Haven't had more than .25 in a rainfall since May.

Dad said back in '88 that it was worse than anything in the dust bowl days.

I'd have to say this is the 2nd worse then in the past 80 years or so.

I have very deep water holding soils, but the corn just has nothing left to find any more. One bean field is starting to go too now.

Won't need all that storage they were afraid they'd need around here for the 'big' corn crop.

We are need of rain here in West Texas also. We got plenty this spring and early summer but somebody shut the valve off. We are thankful for what we got, those that had dry-land wheat said it was the best yield in many years. I hear tell it was nearly as good as the irrigated wheat.

feeling it here in Maryland now. It's SO WEIRD! the entire month of June we had some record rainfalls, and now as we enter August, we have parched corn and beans. Wow, what a shocker! We have nice stalks...but the now-occuring drought hit the ears right in the money maker ... and us right between the legs!!!

Wish we could have given you about 3" Sunday night. In about 12 hours, beginning just about dark, we got 5+ inches in a small area in central Kansas. Worst road damage I have ever seen here in 50+ years. Like they say, too much is better than not enough.

David: I'm in the northeast corner of KS (Atchison). Real dry here yet. Last rain was last saturday or sunday, got less than .25inch,other 2 rains before that about .75inch? Lots of cracked ground & no surface moisture. Some nearby have gotten better rain, but pretty spotty!

No doubt that we're in a drouth, but it's not nearly as bad as '88. Chopped 2 1/2 silage boxes haylage off of 40 acres, chopped our usual 600 tons corn silage from 104 acres, instead of 30-40. But, yeah- it's more than dry. Too much rain is always better than too little. Mud will grow weeds, and cows can eat weeds, but they can't eat dust. We've had both extremes over the last 35 years, and I'll take excess rain anyday.
