Help! Ford 4000 HD Industrial won't move

I just purchased a Ford 4000 HD Industrial with a powershift tranny, front loader & hoe. It runs & the hydraulics work, but it won't drive.

The previous owner was back dragging when it stopped in its tracks and wouldn't move.

I haven't had opportunity to check it out yet, and I'm not sure where to start looking for the problem.

Does anyone know of problems with this transmission or what the problem might be?

Thanks for any advice.

There is a drive disc in the clutch housing, where a normal clucth would be, the hub can shear from the disc and you loose the drive to the wheels and pto(if equipped), requires hoe removal, disconnect loader mount at rear axle, split at clutch and roll back half rearward.

It could be the infamous S-O-S (Select-O Speed) tranny that has failed. It was one of the earliest power shifts in the industry and the earlier ones had reliability and durability problems. Years ago, I had an old-line (four cylinder Diesel) Ford 4000 Industrial TLB just like yours with the SOS that had some issues. It had lost a couple of gears and cost $2800 to fix and that was back in 1991. The older ones were known to have some issues, but the later ones were a little better, by 1975 they were fairly decent, but after that Ford dropped it. The hard thing is finding someone to fix it. If yours had survived this long, especially in hoe service, it was probably one of the better ones. Sounds like a loss of hydraulic pressure somewhere or maybe a band let go. Wish you luck. Try the Ford board.

If this is the case, would it be more feasible to replace the tranny with a standard tranny? Is it even possible to change it over and if so, what kind of modification would I be looking at?
