Any one have any experience with "online" banks? I just see that certificate of deposite rates are far higher than any local banks (ex. Year CD $5,000 6.50% $25,000 7.00% $100,000 7.50% 3 Year CD $5,000 6.75% $25,000 7.25% $100,000 7.75% 4 Year CD $5,000 7.25% $25,000 7.75% $100,000 8.25% 5 Year CD $5,000 7.50% $25,000 8.25% $100,000 8.75% This is through "Millenium bank"
There are numerous other that offer these rates or slightly lower, most are 1-2% higher than anything around here. How do you know which are legitimate banks, how do you know you money is safe and secure? Any advice would be great and probably use ful for most of us. Being on this site yolu know who to trust and who not, so xozitar need not reply.

Thanks for the info guys, I think I am gonna stick with local banks and do my best to play them against eachother, was able to get one of my banks to come up 1.5% on a 13 month CD, I was gonna pull it all out ( bluffing) if they didnt match the other banks special, which I took other cash too any way. So, for right now 5.25% for 13 months is the best deal I can find, but I would really like to get a 2year or more one at 5.5 or better in case rates drop in the time to come soon. I have plenty in the stockmarket already, felt that kick in the pants this am. Oh well, next spring its my turn to crop farm, so I suppose I will be kissing some cash goodbye. Then again..... ....

I got an ING bank account, I don't know what the rate is just now (checked, its 4.5%) but its way higher than any bank in my area. I've got a couple grand stashed there and it makes pretty good money (for what it is) while being available with a day's notice.
When I bought my house I thought about using them for a mortgage but they get to pay a good rate because their mortgage rates are nothing exciting...

Gary in Geneva's comment on having your bank deposit covered by FDIC is right on and as far as security goes, one FDIC bank is just as good as the next. Service can vary. My search for the best rates have at different times taken me to MBNA, Capitol One, ING Direct, First National (Omaha) and others in the twin cities. The one with the best rate for the period, I desire at the time, is the one that gets my money and any I have dealt with I would deal with again.

Mostly I bank at Wells Fargo on-line and am well satisfied, except on C.D.s, others usually have better rates. If you are Well’s on-line account you can look at a menu and select from hundreds maybe thousands of brokered C.D.s and other fixed rate instruments with every maturity and credit rating.

www.emigrantdirect.com will show a 5.05% rate currently in a savings account. You can connect this to your checking account at your bank and do ACH (money) transfers back and forth. If you have free checking on your checking account, these transfers should be free also. They are now showing C.D. rates of 5.1% on terms from 6 months to 10 years. Overseas is not for me.

Thank you God for on-line banking.

Disclosure: I do not own or have ownership in any of the above institutions and many banks especially small-town, do not want people to think like this.

We put a lot of money in CDs at banks via the internet and mail. If they are listed at bankrate.com that is the first hurdle. The second is we get their FDIC number and look them up to make sure that they are insured by the FDIC. Don’t put in more at an institution that what the FDIC will cover for loss.

The local banks don’t pay anything by comparison.

I don't know for a fact but have heard that some of the overseas banks are paying these rates. I would never do a transaction like that on the net,not even with the local banks.I do my banking the old fashion way,I walk into the bank and get things done.Really sounds like a crap shot to me. Internet money could be going into the hands of the evil terrorist.

Ya, did a search on millenium bank and didnt find any good opinions. I try to stay diverse with our savings, but I really would like to lock in on a longer term cd with a good rate in case rates start dropping. Gotta think of the wife and kids for the future. College tuitions are getting nutts.

One of the first rules of investment is that the higher the risk-the higher the return. Its your choise what "risk" you wanr to take. All I can say is that old saying "don't put all your eggs in one basket" Kennyp
