Was wondering how everyones is doing this year.

One of the things I enjoy most about summer is when you get the fresh vegetables from the garden, did some steamed yellow squash tonight and it was excellent. Nothing like that garden fresh tomato too, my patch is so thick I can't walk into it, going to have to make some more room next year, did some eggplant, bell peppers, sweet basil, oregano, and thyme latter 3 to go with all the tomatoes, sure makes one appreciate a garden, nothing else like it.

Garden is coming along well... been gathering broccoli for a few weeks now... sweet corn is filling in ears at this moment.. another week and the first patch should be ready. Lot of roma tomatoes on the vines, nothing turning yet.. Lot of cherry tomatoes also. Picked a few sweet banana peppers the other night and the bells are coming along.

Watermelon and cantelope are coming too... lack of bees have left a lot of flowers unpollenated in the cantelope though. Pumpkins are beginning to bloom and the 2nd patch of sweet corn is just beginning to tassel, Iochief @ 6 feet already and tassels just beginning to emerge.

Peas didn't do for crap this year.

Gonna move the garden from the side yard to behind the shop where I can get full sun all day and triple size next year.

Finally got some meaningful rain down here in the Southern Tier on Monday. Things look considerably better.

Your garden looks great! I am helping my daughter do her first garden. It's a lot of fun. Just came in from hoeing the weeds out of the corn and tomatoes.Brought in some peas and beets for dinner. Nice tractor BillyNY. Is that an "aftermarket" propane tank on the hood? Looks like you have a backhoe for it also.

My grandad taught me how to plant tomatoes, it's a cool thing for a kidt to learn, especially in these times.

I think the plants did well so far, small and compact, compared to the patch I was doing, moved it due to the critters, fence was falling apart etc. but needing the room, I'd like to start another similar in size again, one I can use my tractor on.

The ole 850 is deserving of some restoration, but has made a great utility tractor, grew up on a pre-65 4000, so always had an eye for these. The LPG arrangement may very well be aftermarket, it's an Impco Vaporizer & fuel system not sure who or when that was done, not sure if the serial number would shed any light on the LPG conversion, do know the head for the motor is a different part number. Oil stays clean for a long time, has not been changed since '04 and is still very clean, but ought to get changed this year. A hoe would be handy for many light tasks needing to be done here, those arms were actually on the tractor when I got it, so it did have a hoe on it, explains why the loader frame was broke by the mounts, I use the lower hoe arms to span a bar, that holds the 3 pt lift arms when the counterweight is on, no strain on the hydraulics.

It certainly worked well in those soils with a 2 bottom, and my 7 foot discs, it was turned once, then disc'd, and repeated, lot of fun to do a patch that size

Got a pretty good one going - a lot of the cantelope seed didn't sprout for some reason, but had some volunteer help fill in.

Peppers are really producing super, but the tomatoes never do really fruit out very well for me for some reason.

Been eating a lot of squash and have a lot of pumpkins coming on. I really like a big pumpkin patch with a lot of different types in it! The field corn is just almost ready for roasting ears here.

Nothing like Mom's cooking when it's right out of the garden!

The melons and squash plants that came up are doing great. Tomatoes are real slow growing, have some fruits but aren't turning yet. Peppers and beans are doing ok. Most of the sweet corn came up but it's not very tall. It's starting to tassel and most of it is only 2-3' tall. Anybody know why this is? Tried to keep it watered fairly well and put out 12-12-12 twice.

neighbor le roy has a garden sells lots of stuff from it. some of the stuff is doing well others like sweet corn he doesn't think will make anything as it is to dry. he told me everything small as we haven't had much rain last 6 weeks. my lawn is almost as brown as my road which is crushed lime stone.

Our spring planted garden is gone but it did well this year. Will most likely start the fall garden this weekend or next. Really should get the fall tomatoes planted asap.

John, that's kind of cool, fall tomatoes, growing season there is something I'd take advantage of without hesitation, always wondered how things work in the south where you have a much longer season.

Billy, thanks to early season irrigation and recent rains I have a bumper crop. I harvested cabbage the other day that weighed over 10 pounds a head. Some smaller ones went 7. The best I have had in years. Peppers are good. Going to start canning tomato's tomorrow. Cucumbers are coming and corn is a little late, but looks really good. I canned 39 quarts of sour kraut and 26 pints of chow chow relish. I really enjoy the garden and canning. I like to eat cheap. I hope to fill around 500 quarts and 200 pints of my produce. Broccoli done real well too, but we have about eaten all of it, along with lots of fried green tomato's and fried banana peppers.

That's a lot of canning, kind of a lost art today, nice to look forward throughout the year, something I'd like to get into, although I do process the tomatoes, freeze then cook down for sauce, never canned them before, always something new to learn. I enjoy giving some of the vegetables to friends/relatives just as much as growing them.

Nothing like ones garden, an area I cultivated and planted grass on in '04 for the neighbor was a garden for 40 years, soil was real nice, no rocks, deep dark loam, lots of organic matter, would love to plant there again

Billy, the tomato's are one of the easiest things there is to can. Just scald them in boiling water for a few seconds and pull the skin off. Then pack the jars full add a tbsp of salt and hot water bath for 10 minutes. The sour kraut is really easy as well. I shred it with a food processor and fill jars add one tbsp of canning salt and one of white distilled vinegar put on the lids and sit in a dark place for 6 weeks and you have fine kraut. Some folks ferment it in a stone crock for weeks and then hot bath it to seal jars, but it doesn't need all that. Made in jars is a lot easier and just as good. You can get all the info you need at your local FSA office, or get the Ball Blue Book of canning(available at Wal-Mart) and have at it. It is a lot of work, but it is worth it to me. I can more tomato's then anything. Those new potato's are real good canned too. Then you have green beans and new potato's all year. I also can a lot of hot pickles with onions, cauliflower, carrots, brussel sprouts, various peppers and cucumbers all in the same jar. That is a real looking piece of dirt your plowing there. Should raise a bumper crop.

Good info George, the older generation around here did lots of canning, definitely some work, but has to be worth doing, probably a good feeling seeing the shelves stocked from the garden.

That patch of dirt was deep, the ole 2 bottom is a wreck, that needs a tail wheel and another coulter, it wanted to sink to the bottom, I did not turn up any of the lighter color soil, which is glacial till, gravel/clay, lots of bones, Joe's old garden for many years, was real easy to work up, was planted with grass, rye cover crop came up from the rye mulch I used the previous fall, I will have to duplicate something similar, not sure what he did to get it like that, the lack of rocks is suprising.

Beginning, not all planted, sure crammed a few plants in there though, critters seem to stay away, still have not completely fence it off yet.

Jam packed, bell peppers only ones shaded out, right amount of plants for me, will have to expand next year, all planted in holes filled with my compost with dried blood and bone meal, mulched with old rotten hay. Photo is a little dark, tomatoes have taken over in the back

My garden has been doing well up till the last week or so. It got so dry here I have been watering it every night. I plan to leave the water on all night tonight and probably will have to do that for the next few days. I have canned up about 20 jars of salsa and about that many pickles also. Plus frooze corn and squash

We had a dry spell too, it's been quite awhile since that's happened, well with 2 gutter down spouts, a spigot right in the garden, not too much trouble, soak er down and use thick mulch, holds that moisture well when it gets dry, we're back to frequent rain again lately.
