I have a problem I can"t seem to solve: my tractor ever since I got it (15 years ago) is negative grounded and has started just fine, but in the past few days the new battery -- which has been in it for a month will not keep a charge. I had the 12v alternator and coil checked out and they both are OK.I was told the condenser can"t be checked, so could do nothing there. The tractor will keep a charge when setting in the shed, will start OK, but sooner or later, the battery will not turn it over. I polished all electrical connections, tightened the alternator drive belt, LEFT ALL WIRING THE SAME IT HAS BEEN FOR ALL THESE YEARS, charged the battery fully, and tried to start it several times, THEN it started the "run down" thing again and wouldn"t turn the engine over. The ammeter does move off dead center, but will go drastically to the negative or discharge side when I turn on my headlights, but won"t even budge when I turn on the back light -- wired so it will only work when the ignition is on and is really bright -- but the ammeter will not move like it does with the headlights. I read some posts about a Ford N written in 2002 and there was a lot of information there, but I would really appreciate some help with this problem.

There might not be enough information for a diagnosis here, but thought I would ask.

Pat

I thought of one other thing that I might mention. When I recharge the battery now in the tractor, the charger will click off and on then resume charging. This may be typical of some chargers but it does this after only charging for a few minutes. The battery does seem to have enough charge to then start the tractor but then goes dead after a few starts -- even if the tractor has been running for 2-3 hours under load at full throttle. After reading the posts (which I appreciate), I'm beginning to think the new battery might be at fault (or my charger is going bad). I did have the battery checked by a mechanic (not at the place where I bought the battery) and he said the battery was OK. Still stumped.

Didya check the alternator for input?..... .... A bad or dirty diode will discharge the battery but will still charge somewhat. Do you know that it is wired properly? MANY (including mine) 12V conversions were not wired properly.

Pat,does that thing got a generator or did you change to an alt? If its still got a gen,ill bet your points are sticking shut in your regulator. Good luck,later Hoss

As noted below, if you pull off one battery terminal and use a test light between that terminal and the battery post you took it off of, the test light should stay off. (very little current can actually be drawn by the electronics in the alternator, or anything else (that is turned off) on the tractor. If it does light, disconnect one thing at a time (and reconnect them if they do not cause the light to go out) until the light goes out.
New batteries can be bad (been there and fought that battle with the retailer) so a bad battery is a serious possibility. JimN

First, keeping a charge in the battery has nothing to do with the coil or condenser. Could be one (or more) of three things.
1) you have a discharge from the battery when there should be none (everything supposedly off);
2) the battery has an internal discharge of it's own;
3) it is not being charged on the tractor.

You can check the first by removing the battery lead and checking with a testmeter or bulb between the battery terminal and the removed lead.
If it is the second, the new battery will lose charge while disconnected. You should see a large charging current indicated on you ammeter after the tractor is jump started from another battery 'cos it's own has become discharged. If neither of these (and the generator is OK) and there is no charge the fault will lie between the alternator and ammeter. Like you say, not enough information for a diagnosis, but a few rudimentary checks should easily isolate the problem to a short, bad battery, bad VCR or open circuit in the charging circuit.

Take the battery out of the tractor and see if still goes dead it could be you have a bad battery.
