Just got an older chain driven manure spreader. It sat for 2 years, so I was just wondering what I can put on the chain to "lube" things up a bit??

For old flat link chain in a spreader I just use waste oil. Anything at all. Just find a less than obvious place to park the spreader while you "apply" the oil.... Once the spreader is working in manure, I don't worry about it. Those are slow moving, cool running chains, so it's not like they need much lube.

I agree with old, tranny fluid let it soak a while then run it a little bit and put a thicker oil. Look over all of the links to see if there are any damaged links and repair before you start to load. You do not want to have a chain break and have to shovel it off. I spread a LOT of manure (smelly kind not politician kind). When you are done be sure to clean it up good and oil down the chains.

Napa has a spray can of chain lube we used it on the balers chains works great. Leave the chain on the bed that moves the manure down dry or it will just gum it up and wear it out faster.

I'm seeing reports that chain saw bar and chain oil is really good for lubrication chains in other applications. Applied with a long spout pump oiler.

For things like that I use tranny fluid first then after getting things freed up I use a thicker oil. The tranny fluid cuts the rust and also sinks in deep.
