This is not tractor related, but I have seen other "0/T" questions on this forum. We have been looking for a different "field pickup". We are looking for a 3/4 Ton Chevy/GMC extended cab 4x4 with the 6.5 Diesel. My wife found one yesterday for a very reasonable price. She asked what was wrong and was told that the head gasket was out or that the heads might even be bad. Make me an offer. The thing is, is that we have a set of heads for an older 6.5 diesel and I was wondering if anyone knew if the older 6.5 heads would fit on a 2000 engine. The local Chevy dealer was NO help. Thanks for any help.

I don't know, I had a 98' 3500 Chevy dually that had a 6.5 in it and it was not something I'd wish on anybody. I guess if all you wanted to do was ride around in it that might be ok but compared to my Dodge's it seemed like a play toy. Personally I don't want to worry that if I hook on to a light 10,000 lb. load I am gonna crack a head.

As long as they are truck heads, you are fine.

To my knowledge, all the truck 6.2 and 6.5 heads can be interchanged - except for the later 6.5s that have center-mount turbos (used on vans and some Hummers). 6.5 heads when put onto a 6.2 require a slight bending of the injector lines since the injectors are at a slightly different angle.

Just put new 6.5 heads - the latest version - on my son's 87 Suburban with a 6.2.

The 6.5 heads were improved a bit over the years, but still interchange. The newest heads are now made in China and are much better quality than anything GM ever offered OEM. They each have an extra 4 lbs of iron, and also hardened seat inserts and rotators.
