Anyone have any experience with these pests in Alfalfa? This photo is 3rd cutting that was recently sprayed for leaf hoppers. This stand was seeded last fall, frost damaged early April. First cutting around 5-18-07 then 2nd cut 6-20-07. It is WL357HQ variety, in NW Missouri we have never had much of a problem with leaf hoppers before.

Yup, gottum here in Indiana too. My started to yellow about day 30... I cut on day 34. I normally don't pay too much attention as the Horse owners don't know what a leafhopper is and what is does anyway. Maybe I have been fortunate but when my fields start to yellow a little, it is time to cut anyway.....

Is this the first 357HQ you have planted? I planted a field fall of 2005 and it is giving me REAL nice hay. Yours?

One thought, you might have cut a little early if that Killer freeze in April got you. I waited until 6-9(West Lafayette In) to cut. Just cut on 7-13 as well. My yields are great compared to o thers, especially given we haven't had much rain....

Here in NY they don't recomend spraying for leaf hoppers as general rule. They make the crop look bad but it is still quality forage. Maybe they come in here late enough in the season that we can get away with not spraying. Spraying kills the tiny parasitic wasps that keep the alfalfa weevil under control. The weevil will destroy a field of alfalfa. Alfalfa can tolerate the leaf hopper.

We've had them for years in SE PA usually have to spray after 2nd and 3rd cutting. Never heard about toxicity of squished bugs. Our crop consultant scouts for them.

We have them in SE MN to. They really hurt the plants in a dry year. Mostly 2nd and 3rd cuttings. If the plants have yellow on the leaf edges its to late to spray, damage is done. I should have sprayed my feilds. I figure they took 4 to 6 inches of height off the plants. As for treatment treshold you take a sweep net and make I think 10 sweeps thru the hay. If you catch more than 20 in the net its time to spray.

Yup, seems we have them more years than not the past 6 years or so. Mostly I just cut my alfalfa, but I don't do dairy. See most alfalfa is sprayed 2-3 times now the past years.

The have them in NEMO to some were talking the othe day about you dont want to run them through the Mower conditioner because when squished they release a juice that is toxic. I do not know if this is true just or just a rumor The guy that was talking about it raises about 120 acres of alfalfa for his own use.

Your talking about blister beetles. If they are in horse hay they can cause a horses mouth to break out is blisters. If the horse is really alergic to them they can cause death from a closed airway.
