Hi Gang!
What is a reasonable price for a Brown Swiss milk cow?
We have raised milk goats for as long as I can remember, and now I'd like to get a milk cow as well. My dad used to help out at a dairy called Camp Hill Kimberton Village in P.A. It was a neat place of what little I can remember, and they used Brown Swiss cows. My dad fell in love with them, and now that we have the funds, we're in the market for one. I Know it depends on age, but I think we're either looking for a few day old heifer, a bred heifer or a milker (pref, bred for her next calf)

Thanks

I have been buying Swiss cattle for the last 3 years trying to build up a herd to get back in the business. I have been to several sales that are mostly Swiss and the prices have run pretty high. I have found a dairy in northern Indiana that I purchase calves from. The herd owner is the brother in law of a guy that is likely the premier Swiss breeder today. If you look at any Swiss bloodlines today, about half of them will have the Blessing prefix. The herd I purchase from does not use AI but uses bulls from the best of Blessings cows. I have really appreciated the deal I have been given, I buy weaned calves for $600, I am allowed to pick what ever one I want from the hutches. I have had excellent luck, not lost one yet and they give me every bit of information they have on the calves I select. I attempted to purchase one of Blessings calves but they wanted $3,000 for one. I have bought one Swiss cow, dry after her first lactation, for $1250. She has been in milk for almost 20 months now, and provided milk for the house and her now 1100 lbs steer, as well as all the calves I bring home. I put calves on milk for a month or so even if they have been weaned before purchase. I like my holsteins but am going to go MIG and really believe the Swiss and Jerseys are grass eating milk machines.

Am in the market for a couple of Holstein heifer baby calves. Would they be priced about the same or higher than a Brown Swiss? Am in central In, if you have any.

I have 3 Canadienne hefiers for sale for $500 each around 8 to 9 months old.Similar to Brown Swiss.Actually some Brown Swiss blood was bred into the Canadienne breed back in the 60s because of the Canadienne's small numbers located in Virginia

I been around brown swiss since I was about 16, 20 years ago. I aint ever seen one sail over a fence before. Getting the darn the ol bessies to move is more the issue, this is a herd that has been respected, and any nutty ones turned to burger. Prior to 16 and even since then I was only around holsteins, I dont trust them or like chasing them. If you after milk for the table you'll love the swiss. Any steers you feed plan on increasing the amount of feed, corn, they dont pack on the lb's like a holstein or shorthorn. Swiss are a great breed, well, as long as you dont end up with a descendant of old Moolah,...ohh the awful flashbacks of her, yikes. Good luck.

Newborn heifer calves $500
open heifers $800-$1000
bred heifers $1000-$1200
Springing heifers $1500-$1800
Fresh Heifers $1800-$2200
Cows depends on age and stage of lactation $1200-$2000.

My wife and I sell Registered Jerseys and Jersey/Holstein crosses. Any other breed you would be paying similar prices. These are the prices we've been asking based on market conditions. Nobody has had a problem paying these prices if they want animals.

I don't know a price but we had one when I was in 4H and that darn thing could clear just about any fence we put up! But it sure was a pretty thing!
