John Deere 620 clutch problem?

Need Help!
Symptoms: I have a 1950s John Deere 620 tractor that will start and idle perfectly. I can throttle the tractor to full without problem. When I put the tractor in gear, I have to hold the hand clutch forward as far as it will go and maintain this position. The tractor will move forward for about 50 meters and stop. If I drop the disks during these 50 meters, the tractor will taper off as it wants to shut off. I have to stop and rush to throttle it back down to a low idle for the engine to catch up and wait there for awhile to slowly lift the throttle again. The tractor will not usually move again until I do something to it � like tighten or loosen the three bolts on the clutch. I know that I should not have to hold the hand clutch forward the whole time that I am operating the tractor.

I have to hold the hand clutch all the time the tractor is in motion. The tractor loses power � especially with the slightest load (bush hog / disk) The tractor�s engine fades after a short run with a light load.

I really need your assistance. I will probably get deployed this fall for my third tour in the Middle East and want to at least leave the estate in good order. The weeds are overtaking the property and I am trying to do my best traveling to SC on the weekends and long holiday weekends to get the tractor fixed to no avail. I am leery about trying to ticker to far in fear of making matters worse. I cannot afford to give up � knowing how much my father loved that tractor and how well he kept everything maintained. The neighbors also miss the community garden that he always planted for sharing.

From what you are saying, it sounds like your tractor is starving for enough gas to do any kind of work. My 630 was acting some like that recently. The automatic shutoff under the tank had some stuff in it. After cleaning it all was well again. The clutch adjustment should be tight enough to snap into place without having to hold in, if I'm understanding you right. Your clutch should have no effect on how the tractor is running. Good Luck.
