Hello friends,
I want to try my hand at 30 acres of corn/soybeans off the inherited family farm in Nebraska. Unsure what is the correct horsepower size sufficient to handle 30 acres? I have no preference on manufacturer or year. Though I need to start dirt cheap with used tractor and equipment.

What I hope to gain with this question. Recommended makes and models that are affordable and that will last the 5 years of introductory farming.

Thank you

You want to farm or play around with tractors. I wouldn't have anything less than 100 hp dual wheels it take power to to pull a good size plow and disc and you wil want to get a good size one so that it doesn't take two weeks to get the job done. I have Case LA about 58 HP stock can pull a 12 ft. double disc and 4 bottom plow in good ground. it would take me a week to get the field ready to plant you want to get it done in one day or may be two. You need 100 to 150 HP.
Walt

30 Hp you got to be kidding of course.

Well not that this answers your question and i wouldnt recomend doin this unless you had to. And most people prolly wont believe me. But in the 50's, my grandfather his two brothers and his dad farmed 700 acres with 2 WD-45's and 2 WD's. They were the big time farmers in that area and they worked really hard. But now we farm 1800 acres with 2 John Deere 8650's, and many other tractors but those are our primary tillage tractors.

Not at all unbelievable. This whole country was farmed with those old small tractors. Folks now just don't remember those days. I still use several small tractors. All Farmalls though. When I was a kid we thought an M was a monster, couldn't see why anyone needed a tractor that big.

That works in an arid wheat area, back in the day, & 2 full time fellas doing the work.

Neighbor ran 80 acres of land with an 8N here - corn & soybeans & oats. That's a lot to put under one N in our wet weather. His only job tho, full time farming - back then.

I bet this fella might have a regular job & need to wedge the farming into a few hours now & then. :) Need to get something done when he has the time to do it. Nebraska grows a lot of corn, but under irrigation & big pivots I thought. Surprised he can grow it on a 30 acre field.

Besides, the bigger tractors sell for less these days than the little ones. He needs cheap hp.

Thanks for the story. :)

You can farm it with 30 hp if that is your main job.

If you are farming it on weekends & evenings, 50 hp will do.

If oyu are married & want to do other thangs as well in spring, you want 70 hp.

The good news: 30 hp tractors are all the rage with the 5 acre yuppies as well as collectors, and are over-priced.

You can often buy a 70 hp tractor for the same money. They are kinda big for the yuppies, and too small for the real farmers. I'd look in the 60-80 hp, diesel, 1958 or newer. (Cool features you will want started appearing in the mid 1950's....) Avoid the 'glitzy' options, such as Ford's Select-o-Speed, or other things that have faded away again. While some of these things worked ok in their day, after 50 years of service they tend to be more trouble & expense than worth.

Without knowing what you're gonna be doing for tillage and other purposes, I'd say go with a 60-85 HP tractor. If you could get a Massey 285, they are a great tractor and don't need much maintnance(repairs) Oliver's are great too, but a little older. Something like a 1600-1650-1655 or a 1750/55 would probably fit nicely. We have a 1600 gasser, 1855 deisel, and a Massey 165 gas and 285 deisel. I'm sure in it's day the 165 was designed for 100 acres+, but in my mind if I can get the day's work done faster, the more time I have for other things. That's why we have the 1855 that puts out 105 HP on the dyno, to run 65 tillable acres. Sure it's more than enough, but I don't want to spend 3 weeks pulling a 1 row chopper just to get the corn in. I've got a job to work as well, so i don't have a ton of time.

It's also why we've got a 14' hydro-swing haybine to cut 30 +/- acres of hay each year. Only had it for a little more than a year, but put it behind the 285 (or 1855, depends on the mood, and fuel in the tank) and I'll never go back to cutting it with our 9'er that we keep for cutting swamp grass to chop for bedding.

Anything that's a deisel, and has 60-85 Hp, would be on my list, but I'm also partial to Massey & Oliver. Someday I may get me a 16 series deisel to go with the 1600 gas. Basically the same tractor over the years, just some minor improvements made over the years like HP. My 1600 has been overhauled with 1655 pistons & sleeves...

I"m going against the grain here and going to suggest a Case 930 diesel. In your neck of the woods they are plentiful and inexpensive. The tools they will handle are too big for the small guys and too small for the big guys so they are cheap too. And eventually you will just want to get it done without spending night after night going back and forth.Try a Comfort King over the older standard.

Buy the least expensive diesel that will get the job done because running gas tractors these days will break the bank.off brands are cheaper and most just as good or better than 'main' brand tractors.Depends on your methods also notill would mean a tractor just to pull the drill.Conventional would mean plowing, disking run a cultipacker, cultivation etc. Also how much time do you have to work on it? No matter what the first time around you are almost guaranteed to loose money.

In the 1950's my Dad farmed 200 acres with an 8N Ford as his only tractor.Half of it was tillable.A neighbor farmed much more with just an H Farmall.

A 30-40 HP tractor is all you really need but as they say bigger is better.

Man, dont listen to them. Those are Big, expensive tractors. I would get me a Farmall H or M. We are talking $800-1300 for one in good condition, and a five foot disk, two bottom plow, and a 5' brushhog.

This is as cheap as possible. The Farmall CUB (8 hp) was designed for farms less then 40acres, but I cant really see that happening.

The H was designed for farms up to 160acres. There is No 3pt hitch on them.

If you want a 3pt tractor, get an 8N. About the same price, just a smaller frame and a few less HP.

These tractors are the right size, and I am POSITIVE this is what to get. Trust Me.

Do you have any idea how long it takes to disk 30 acres with a 5 foot disk 2 or 3 times. It won't even harrow out the tire tracks of a H or M. H will easily handle 7-8 foot and the M will handle 8-10 foot disc.

Massey Ferguson 65; Ford 800 series; Ford 4000 series; Allis Chalmers D 15 or D17. These would be what I'd consider in relation to power, effeciency, initial cost, and handiness.

I agree all would be good choices, just want give him a little more food for thought. I have a Ford 5000 diesel here in Illinois, a Ford 861 gasoline back in Nebraska and an IH 1066 diesel also in Nebraska. The 5000 runs very cheap on fuel, the 861 uses probably twice what the 5000 does. The 1066 LOVES its fuel to the tune of 5 GPH or more. Anyhow, the diesels are less maintainance in some ways and more in others. If he wants to do winter snow removal gas may be better. I can always get my diesels started in the winter, for for the beginner gas is likely the better option. Also, should he buy something with mechanical problems, most shade tree mechanics are better equipped to handle the problems with gas burners. Also, 5000 ford size, or at least get above 50 HP, will open more options as to usable equipment. The stuff that fits the little Ford and Ferguson size tractors is mostly all worn out, otherwise it brings top dollar. I can pull a 16 ft IH 480 disk behind the 5000 with no big problem, and bought it cheaper than the 10 to 12 ft the 30-40 HP tractors pull.

I would suggest that a 50 hp tractor would be fine for 30 acres. Also a Farmall M or H or many others might be considered. My preference for used would be a Massey Ferguson. Most of them have good hydraulics and the diesels are very easy to service and provide good power. Nebraska is flat so four wheel drive should not be needed. farmed 150 acres with one 10 years ago and did fine.
