That helped plant the 12 million more acres of corn this year. The price of Soybeans on the CBOT for Sept closed today at $9.23.I don't have a lot of acres, but, what's not in hay is in beans.

Looking over the comments here, I found the corn-bean discussion of interest as it explains some decision making and the structure of the composition appears to come from enlightened authors.

You are so welcome. I planted all corn and sold most of it for a cash price ranging from $3.60 and $4.10/bu. Expected yield is over 200 bu/acre. A early check showed 225 to 245 bu/acre. If lucky, bean yield would be around 50 bu/acre. Beans would have to get well up into the teens before I would have been better off. Besides I rather shell corn any day, rather then run a bunch of dirt thru my combine running beans.

I did pretty much the same thing. Planted all corn this year. I usually do a 50/50 corn/soybean rotation. I have most of my corn production contracted at $3.91 to $4.05 per bushel, off the combine. Plus, I have contracted for an additional .25 to .50 cents per bushel for NGMO. I was considering switching to all corn even before the big price run up. Beans are becoming a more troublesome crop all the time. Aphids, the new rust threats, more herbicide resistant weeds, SDS and pretty much flat yields. And, yes, the dirt. So, at 200 bu./acre @ 4.50 a bushel, I"m satisfied that I planted all corn this year.

Corn on corn has worked very well for a lot of farmers. I decided on corn/soybeans many years ago and it has woked out very good for me. My soybeans seem to like growing in corn residue and are pumping N into my fields for my corn next year. You sound like a dyed in the wool corn grower, like my neighbor. He tried soybeans once and it was a complete flop. My observation would be this. If your land/season/weather/ growing program will support 245 bu corn, why are you only getting 50 bu beans? My best hope is for 200 bu corn (95 day)but I rarely achieve it except for spots. I routinely harvest 65-70 bu beans and am sure I can do better. I'm only 71 years old and am still learning. Also the beans, overall, require fewer trips over the field, less fertilizer and, as I mentioned, help fertilize my corn. Actually, the two are very complimentary crops.

Haven't really found the problem with beans. Tried earlier planting, fungicide, blanket micro-nutrients, liquid fertilizer (non-salt) and always innoculated. They can look great and still be very disappointing. Never had an aphid, red spider mite or cyst nematode problem. Have seen some SDS. The general "buzz" from the local grapevine, is that few in this area typically reach 60 bu/acre. Some with very limited success, have used three preventative fungicide and insecticide applications. I've never tried but probably should do tissue samples. On the other hand, good corn is not always a given. If you have a droughty year, it can be darn poor. However beans are mediocre regardless whether it rains or not, and corn hasn't received the yield boosting attention we have given beans. In contrast, I have been able to grow very good wheat regardless of the weather. If in the next month or so, Nov 08 beans go above $10, I'll likely sell 30-40% on a hedge-to-arrive contract and thereby be forced to give them a try again next year.

At least one other person in the world (you) saw it the same way I did. I attended the corn/soy conf in Wis Dells in Jan/Feb. I read a lot of things. Everything pointed to a greater demand for corn. So, guess what? 93 million acres of corn, that's what. This was my normal year for soybeans in my rotation , so I stuck with it. All soybeans this year. Neighbors asked: Why didn't you plant corn? I answered: Too many bushels to harvest. I prefer soybeans. Heh, heh, heh. We have yet to see who laughs last but I think (hope) it will be you and me. Regards.

I kept my little boundry of beans in beans too. I have a neighbor who has raised nothing but beans for the last 15 years. He went to all corn this time trying for the big money. Farmers usually do this when corn prices go up, and cut their own throats. Looks like we would learn.
