Here are some pics from back in the dirty 30's from out here, when so many people left the area and headed to California like in Grapes of Wrath.

I remember several tractors mostly buried in the fence rows out here back in the 70's & 80's as a kid from that era:

The last pic was from near our county seat in Cimarron county during a huge dirt storm. Members from the family of the folks in the picture still live out here.

Seems I remember that bottom picture from History text books in elementary and high school. I know I remember that buried tractor a few posts down. I was fascinated by that picture. Probably got yelled at for not paying attention when I was studying that tractor in the book.

There's a great book out on the dust bowl: "The Worst Hard Time" by Timothy Egan.

My folks grew up during the dust bowl. Strange thing is, neither one talked much about it, although it must have affected their lives a great deal.

Hello Howard,
In what state is this at? I have seen pictures that are simular to this from relatives that were in Oklahoma, New Mexico, and West Texas. I'm sure that this was pretty much the same all over the Mid Western States.

Here is a map showing the worst parts of the dust bowl:

Lake Optima is near the east side of the center of the worst part - that discussion is sort of what triggered all this.

Here are two pics taken in Stratford, TX in the 30's - where I live:

My Dad lived through many of these storms - he says at times all you could do was get in the house and get under a wet sheet to sort of filter out the dust so you could breathe.

I thought it might be interesting, since these hard times and these historical problems with soil and water control are a large part of why the government is so involved with farming today...
