David (and others, obviously),

I have enjoyed lurking here and really admire your pictures and input on the way they do it "over there."

I saw your comment on the square baler recently and I wondered, given the UK's preference for large squares and also its smaller farms, if you have seen a good way to handle large square bales like the bale buggies that are available for large round bales here. In other words, some kind of small trailer with an integral means of loading that can be pulled by a small tractor or quad. I have a Ford 860, which is very useful but I am suspect of its ability to pick up a big square with a bale spear.

Regards,

Phil Crome

Hi;
In the arable areas where most of the grain is grown they use big square bales for straw because they are easier and more convenient to ship on trucks to the grass & livestock areas. Round bales are mainly used for forage and on smaller mixed farms for forage & straw.
Some people have modified their (small square bale) flat 8 handlers, or bought heavy duty handlers to fit their loaders to move the big square bales.
Cheers David

Phil, I think your tractor will handle them fine with a spear. We load and unload them on flat wagons with a 444 IH and a hi-jacker spear. We did put 500 lbs of weight on the front, but it works fine.
