The E-250 church vans we have all run 5.4 V8's. They will go if you stomp on it even with 15 people in it, but we average 12 miles per gallon with a 3.73 rear end.

The rear end size matters when charting gas mileages. A Ford 3.73 will use less gas than a 4.10 gear set, but the 4.10 gear set will have more engine torque at the ground.

My 2003 F-250 (4wd) varies from 10 to 14 mpg. For example, pulling a 16' box trailer on the interstate, around 10 mpg depending on headwind. Just made a 1000 mile round trip fron central Illinois across Missouri to Oklahoma with an 18' flatbed to pick up a case backhoe, averaged a little over 11 round trip. Truck without trailer on the interstate makes about 14 mpg. As far as reliability, ok so far but it only has a little over 10,000 miles and is usually only used for a heavy load. (My 1995 F150 4wd has 240,000 miles) The 5.4 has plenty of power.

You may want to check some of the Ford truck sites, such as>Link
but>Link I belieive some of the earlier 5.4 engines had some head problems (spark plugs siezing in threads). Not sure when they fixed it.

I have a 5.4 F-150 and had an E-250 . The power is acceptable for occasional towing. The fuel mileage is around 14 mixed driving with and can be as good as 17 to as low as 11 depending on the work its doing. A LOT depends on the rear-end ratio. As far as dependability I have had great dependability out of mine. I heard stories about some of the earlier ones but have had no problems with either of these in 150K miles.

I have a 06 F-150 4x4 automatic and it gets 16 around town. I have not had it on road trip lately so I don"t know what it gets on the highway.
