MF 65 Starter Solenoid problems…

Hi,

I have a MF 65 Diesel and the starter’s solenoid has a problem. The copper on the bolt is worn enough (see attached photo) that it doesn’t engage the copper ring to complete the circuit to start the starter motor. Since it will take at least 10 days for my local dealer to get a new one in I was wondering if I could fix it.

Here’s what I propose to do: I’ll face off the copper on the bolt face in a lathe so that it is flat. I’ll then solder a new piece on and face it down to the original size. I was thinking of using a penny but now I’m not too sure they are copper so I’ll get some flat copper stock. Does this sound like a plan to you experts? By the way, is it possible to buy just the bolt?

Anyway…what say ye…

Thanks

Follow up...

So far everything is working fine. I'll post back when/if it fails so others will know if they want to do the same if they are confronted with the same problem.

Thanks everyone for all of your help, I appreciated it very much!

Mike

Jiles,

Thanks for the idea!

The backside of the lug is square (kind of like a plow bolt) so it won't turn when the battery cable is attached. You're right though... in a pinch your suggestion would work just fine! I ended up facing the front off and silver soldering a piece of copper on (.060" thickness). The total time to do it was about 8 minutes. Looking at it, I think it will last a long time.
Someone told me I can get replacement lugs for it for around $1.25 apiece. I think I'll see if that is the case and keep a couple on hand. This should completely eliminate any chance of me have this problem again and my heirs will have some copper lugs to throw away.

Thanks again...

Mike

If you are in a bind, simply put a washer under the dolt head. This will extend the head for better contact. I would also file the head flat.

JSTPA,

I just called a repair shop and the fella said "Yep, I can fix you up... they costs $15.95 each." Needless to say, I won't be darkening his door!third party image

I tried some automotive stores, NAPA, etc., but without a part number and car make they are at a loss.

The only way that would make since is if hes trying to sell you a whole automtive solenoid. Keep looking there's no way you'll have to spend that much. jstpa

Just go to a rebuild shop and get a new bolt, we sell them for 1.25. Or if you have another delco automotive starter from the 60"s to 80"s steal the bolt out of them, almost all of them are the same. jstpa

As long as yo are using a hard solder (silver solder) and not plumbing solder Should be ok for ever - well nearly. Low temp solder may melt and end up with a starter motor that won't stop!

You could do the way you say maybe, but if you can find a place that rebuilds starters they probobly have one of those bolts. They might even give you one if you ask.

TomTex,

Thanks for the response! I took your advice and posted this over on the Massey Board. Now if the "forum police" come after me for posting in two different forums I'll send them after you too for being an "accomplice". third party image

rongrong,

Yes the picture isn't very clear but what you suggested is what I did before and it worked for several years. I'm told that pre 1964 pennies are all copper...so unless someone tells me I'm crazy maybe I can fix it for a "penny"! third party image

I never done that but I will bet someone on the Massey Board has BTDT. Tom
