So what did you folks use? Did anyone use barn siding and place it horizontal?

I plan on using 7/16's osb on the walls and tin for ceiling and them blow ins on top of that cheapest way to go .

I have most of my tools hung on the wall, bottom 4 ft is OSB then 1/2" plywood the next four feet
I only have an 8 ft ceiling in the shop and the ceiling is 1" insulation board with the shiny film on it to reflect light. The walls are almost
painted white.

I used slatwall, I have a buddy who works for a place who makes it ad I got it for $2 a sheet. It's extremely heavy and hard to put up by yourself. Also, each sheet was 8' 1", so I had to cut an inch off each end.

My last building I used white metal siding for a liner. Looks very nice, but does echo. Not as bad with equipment in there. It is a pole building so with purlins on the inside I ran it vert. If you had regular studs I would think horz. would be most practical. The local Amish use the metal siding horz. on the outsides. They mostly use block foudations with stud walls.

They sell a product called accoustical steel. Basically regular liner panel with lots of tiny holes in it. A friend has it in his shop and it really deadens the sound well. Ask your local lumber yard about it; don't bother at HD or Menards - they'll just look at you funny.

Another suggestion I would have is to run a 1x6 treated baseboard around the entire perimiter of the shop. Much easier to clean than having the steel all the way to the floor.

My uncle lined his meat market this way many years ago. Steel all the way to the floor then caulking at the bottom. They washed it down every night with extra hot water and it held up extreamly well over the years.

I DID that, place white colored metal barn siding sideways!! I love it, it's so clean. What else could you possibly do really? Everythings expensive.

My idea would be to put 3/4 plywoood around the electric panel and around the large drive in door. Then put one row of 3/4 plywood four feet high all the way around the remainder of the shop wall at the floor level, then put metal barn roofing horizontal from the plywood to the ceiling of the shop.

On mine the 4' ofplywood works good, plus 8.0' in the shop part for hanging tools. The rest is drywall, (1/2") and white barn siding in the ceiling. Barn siding on the walls is too loud and echos in a larger building.

I used white steel siding on ceiling and wall. It's easy to clean and really reflects light. The only thing I don't like is the floresent lights make a humming noise on the metal.

We used board insulation floor to ceiling and then put 3/4 ply board 4 foot up on all the walls and put it eight foot behind the work bench keeps things from going through the insulation. The equipment dealer in town is building a new shop and they are putting tin 6 feet up the inside wall to keep from stuff hitting and tearing insulation.

used texture 111 over 1/2 foam insuboard and painted white,it will hold up a lot better than sheetrock and you can also drive a nail in it

24 inch wide clear cherry boards are going up for the floor in the loft if I don't sell them. That would be nice for the walls also!

Check local suppliers for some steel roofing / siding that is seconds - much cheaper. The other option is to look at liner panel grade - same stuff with a lesser quality paint, galvalume, etc., but works great inside. Keep the steel up off the floor by using a thin shim of wood when you install and move the shim along as you go.

Good luck,

Bill

I used 1/2" drywall, got the joints tight, did not tape them-I like it just fine. I can easily find the studs and ceiling joists that way! Greg

With 7/16" OSB around $5.00 a sheet it would be hard to beat the price and it's durable.

I used 1 in. thick styrofoam between the 2x4 nailers for the side, then covered the bottom 4 ft. with 7/16 OSB board. From there to the top of the wall I used 1/4 surplus pegboard. Made a great place to hang stuff, but could use more insulation.

I used OSB but thats what I had a stack of . I like being able to stick a nail or hook where ever needed . I`ve seen alot of people use metal siding and it works well but all was run vertical , why are you thinking hor.

Same thing as the floor.

So much junk you can't see either ;)

Rumor has it the shop walls are concrete block. It's been a while since they were plainly visible.

I guess one of the draw backs to placing the barn siding horizontaly would be that the dirt / dust could set on the ribs. But then again its just a shop.

I used sheet rock and finished it like in a house. I now say that I will never do that again. It has several drawbacks. I really like some buildings I have seen that have steel lining the interior. I think that's what I would do if I had it to do over again.

A lot of guys around me are using steel, non coloured on the interior, spraying foam insulation and them applying it horizontally. I don't know if that is more than painted chipboard or plywood but it seems the popular trend

I used OSB, then put a spacer in and put pegboard on the wall facing the inside of the barn. That way I have places to hang shovels, hoes, and such so I can find them. Works great.

yes OSB and in some areas I put pegboard on top of it, shelves in other places, and nothing in a few I sheathed the walls in my metal working corner with sheet metal.
