I'm confused, just pulled the right rear axle and noticed the inner axle seal doesn't have a machined surface on the axle to rest itself on. Is this normal? (it's the first time I've done this) thanks johnz

NO, 50 up had the inner seal and the shaft was machine fer it to ride on. BUT it may not B a problem, only if it leaks. 48 and 49 did not use the inner seal so I spec somewhere along the line the axle was replaced. most folks remove the lower bolt on the inspection cover on the side of the rear case were the hydraulic dip stick goes and fill to were it starts to run out the bolt hole and stop, about 4 1/2 gal. That usually will keep the excess out out of the brake shoes. BUT if you have the inner seals and feel you need the extra protection you will need the axle fer a 50 & up 8N

I don't remember a seal going there..The only seal I know of is behind the bearing under the thick steel ring that's shrunk onto the axle shaft..
