Using Hyd cylinder for 3 Point hitch top link

Hi Guys, I am tired of getting off my tractor to adjust the turn buckle top link on my old International 230 tractor, so I went to tractor supply and bought an 8in x 2.5in hydraulic cylinder to replace it with.

I use a 7 ft blade and a scoop a lot for drive way work. The scoop is the main problem. The 3 point hitch on the 230 used to be a fast hitch and it is about twice as long as the added top link. It connects way up under the tractor. Problem is nothing attached will stay parallel.

If I use the turnbuckle to level out the scoop for scooping something, when I raise the hitch the scoop tilts and the contents drop out. I have to get off the tractor and crank the turnbuckle all the way in before raising the scoop, so I am trying a hyd cylinder. Do you think a cylinder will be able to handle the stress of grading and what ever else?

Thanks!

Randy: I have used a hydraulic cylinder for a top link for years. It works very, very well for most of my work, especially for lawn grading and seeding. You are forever wanting to change the pitch when grading with the box scraper. My cylinder is 4 inch diameter with an 8 inch stroke. Obviously a smaller diameter cylinder will work; you just will have faster travel or extension/shortening of the piston. It will lift or tilt anything that the 3 point will lift, up to and including a 200 gallon tank for the sprayer. Works great - wouldn't want to be without it. You just need special ends for mounting to tractor and implement. My tractor is equipped with dual rear remotes. One goes to the top link cylinder; the other to a cylinder so that the implement on the 3 point can be tilted sideways.

I got mine from CCM - I think that is 'Hay Dr' around here. Has pilot valves so it doesn't creep on a person.

Love it. Stays on my little utility/compact tractor all the time save for the post hole digger. Price was right I thought, for the pilots & all.

He has one end cat 1, other end is cat 2. Might bother some, I like it that way.

Hi Randy;
I can see your point over adjusting the top link continually. I sold implements for a manufacturer for 26 years, and saw this happen a few times to get extra penetration.
If you "power down" too much you will raise the tractor rear wheels & loose traction; or on a 4wd tractor the front wheels will do all the work and you can get axle problems.
I went to see a landscaper on a warranty claim on one of our rotary cultivators, breaking & wearing out blades. He had 50" rotovator on 25HP 4wd Kubota. The front tyres were bald where they had done all the driving, the rear tyres didnt touch the soil! It was like a banana LoL. All the weight was on front wheels & rotovator shaft/blades. No he didnt get warranty claim !!!
Just be careful what pressure you put on the implement. Hope it works out for you.
David

Hi Randy where are you located? I'm about 30 miles nw of pgh. I've thought about doing the same thing mainly to keep a 3 pt hitch sprayer level and wondered also if the cylinder would be stong enough. Glad you asked the question now i have another project to think about.

You will love such a setup. My auxiliary valve did not seal perfectly and I added a pilot-operated check valve so that the cylinder did not creep while transporting a implement in the raised position.

Hey Randy, here's what I made up - A 3" bore round [not tie rod] ram, the rod end fit right on the top link pin, I made a clamp to fit the body for the other pin. It's moved 3000 lb. logs without bending or breaking. I also use it on a 1 yd. JD bucket I made into 3 ph.

There is at least one company that makes ends to put on a regular cylinder to convert it to a top link. They're just little short pieces about 1" thick and about 3" wide and 6" long or thereabouts, with a 1"hole in one end and a ball in the other end. Put one on each end of the cylinder and you are set to go. They do lengthen the cylinder just a bit, which may or may not be a problem. A friend of mine got them to make a hyd top link for a three point fork lift. I can't help you on the brand name, but I think he had his local Deere dealer order them out of a short line catalog. Choose a hydraulic ram HD enough it doesn't bend. Then order a ram one size more HD.

Baum Hydraulics (www.baumhydraulics.com) has such a cylinder in their catalog.

If the tower on the three point is the same height as the distance between links at the tractor end the three point load will lift parallel. If the tower on the implement is shorter than the tractor end, the load will tilt back when lifted. If the tower on the implement is taller, the implement will tip foward.

Some low cost three point platforms have short towers and tilt backwhen raised.

Yes it wlll as long as your cylinder has wobble ends like 3pt. toplink does otherwise you risk breaking cylinder clevses(ends). They make a special cylinder for 3pt top link with those special ends. Tractor Supply should have them or can get them. Armand

Hi

I use a cylinder as top link for several years now
I bough it at an hydraulic machine shop they installed swivel balls ends same as the stadard top link.

It greatly facilitates implements hook on/off
Permits fast adjust of rear blade bite " " " " box blade
Permits dumping of the carry-all
Permits to adjust angle and dump cement mixer
It is fantastic with a boom pole
And many other uses.....

No more use of standard top link.

My 2¢
