good price for a chevy 400?

what would a good price for a chevy 400 small block be? good running, burns no oil, but no rebuild any time in the last few years.. guy wants $400 for it.. too much ya" think? thanks, Tim

Good and Chevy 400 are contradictory terms. Fresh 400s run like he-- but with their short rods and long stroke they load the cylinder wall so bad that they wear themselves out quick.

around here that would be decent, can you hear it running, maybe do a compression test on it anyway

A lot depends on how many miles it has on it. If its say 50,000 or less thats cheap but if its say 150,000 then thats high. It not like a tractor that you can look and see things on, engines you can't just look at or here run and know for sure they are good bad or between some place

Just guessing but it doesn't sound out of line for a known good engine.
