I would like to know what it take to adjust the carb?
The two idle screws, how much do they need to be turned out?
Whats the big brass screw on the bottom of the bowl?
Witch way does that screw have to be?
It would start fine with the choke, but will not idle.
But, it also seems to be running rich,I can smell it I have the carb off now, their is some rust in their that I will clean, but what then. I DON'T want to pay $250 for rebuild, their doesn't seem to be much to the carb.
Also, whenI started the tractor, their was oil leaking out of the hose between the top air cleaner bracket and the top intake of the carb.
I don't have any oil in the bottom of the oil bath air cleaner, would that have something to do with it?

buickanddeere got it right, Don't do anything else until you get manuals for the tractor. You may ruin something that will cost many times the cost of manuals. Tom

You mention two carb adjusters, so I will assume you have the early 60 with a single barrel carburetor. If so, the outside needle (left) should be open abour 1.5 to 1.75 turns to get it started. The inside needle (Right) should be open about 1.25 to 1.5 turns. Once it is running, you can re-adjust them to get best performance. The idle needle (left) is adjusted with the engine running at a fast idle. (no load) Adjust to get the smoothest performance. The load needle (Right) will have to be adjusted when you have a load on the tractor. That big nut on the bottom is just to hold it all together. Most likely, you will have to do some cleaning to get it to run right.

The only 60's with single barrel carbs and A cylinder heads were the 1st few all-fuel until mid 1953. And the 1st few LP tractors from Sept 1953 until serial #6040104. Mother Deere provided retro fit packages to update the single barrel LP's into dual barrel carb/60 cylinder head.

no such thing as a 1952 60 or even a 1953 60.

Yes--the Model 60 was introduced in 1952. Refer to the serial number guide on the left menu.

You're under arrest for making too many assumptions and guesses. #1, not having a basic operators manual. #2, thinking that the carb is simple when it is full of intricate nozzles and passages that need to be cleaned out. #3, operation of the tractor puts you and others at harm.

I'm sorry for not knowing everything about john deere.
How did you lean about tractors?
I'm sure at one time you knew nothing about fixing tractors

"The two idle screws, how much do they need to be turned out?"

ASSUMING the carburetor is in good shape, with no plugged passages, adjust them 'til it idles nicely... that's the beauty of old stuff over modern emission-conrolled engines... the old stuff can be adjusted 'til it runs well! (There is one idle screw for EACH cylinder... essentially two separate carburetors sharing one float bowl.)

"Whats the big brass screw on the bottom of the bowl? Witch way does that screw have to be?"

The big brass screw controls the gas flow in the "LOAD" circuit... the more you back it out (CCW) the more gas flows to the load circuits in BOTH barrels.

"I DON'T want to pay $250 for rebuild, their doesn't seem to be much to the carb."

There's MORE passages in there than you obviously THINK there are! The fact it doesn't run well proves some are plugged. You need detailed instructions, one of the videos on the market, or the help of a pro, if you ever intend to get it working properly.

"I don't have any oil in the bottom of the oil bath air cleaner, would that have something to do with it?"

Clean the oil out of the intake tube, clean and refill the air cleaner cup with engine oil, to the level indicated by the marks.

STOP..... ..... ..put your hands up and back away from that tractor. Call 1-800-522-7448 and order the parts, service and operator's manuals for the 60. Go to the John Deere section of this site and perform some searches on carburetors & aircleaners.
