This is my new grain mover, well this and a trailer I haven't got yet.

Link

What I need to know is what I have to do to get plates for her. 78+ farm plates is what I need but I have been told I need to fill out a form from the local IRS office before getting the tag. So does anyone know what form and what the cost will be? I have 25,000 bushels to move this coming month and 15,000 the following and that is if I don't sell anymore. Plus I would like to move some sand and limestone so the sooner the better on the plates. Thanks in advance!

They are probably talking about Form 2290, Heavy Highway Vehical Use Tax Return. Will run about $550.00 every year. After you file it the IRS sends back "Schedule 1" with their stamp on it to prove you've paid it.

Ah ha! That is what I finally came up with too. Had to call three different license branches to get that answer! Printed the form off from the IRS web site so now I just need to know where to file it. Does it go to the IRS office? Can't get a real person on the phone there and if you finally do they don't know anything and send you on another trip through recorded options. Thanks for the help!

Don't you just have to? in reply to JoeBob/IN, 05-30-2007 09:41:43
File the form and mark the truck as farm exempt (thus no $550)? I guess that's if you meet the requirements. Yes, it is filed at the IRS office. The form instructions should have the address but we usually just take ours to the local office since we're always running late with it. :-)

In Virginia you do not need a CDL to drive a farm vehicle. If you have farm tags you need insurance which you need to check with your farm insurance carrier--there is a break since it is an unlicensed vehicle used only a few times a year. Farm tags mean you have to stay within 30 miles of the farm--uh OK the boys drive all over the state and into Maryland--risking insurance coverage. Then there is licensed farm vehicles which can go 150 miles from the farm.
Why do I know all this? Did the research with our DMV when I bought my truck. I suggest you do the same research with your DMV and insurance carrier.

I think there is a Federal tax on trucks above a certain weight, to be paid, every year. Perhaps that why they need the IRS letter..

And don't forget your CDL, health card, logbook etc. There also has to be a federal inspection on both the truck and trailer to be done yearly.Your local tag agent should be able to guide you through the maize but here is the info for your state. Hope it is current. Commercial and Farm Truck Div. Sec of States Office, Room 300 Centennial Building. 2nd and Edwards Sts Springfield Ill. 62756 (217) 782-4815

in most states you or your employees don't need a CDL for farm use as long as you stay 150 miles from home and have farm plates on truck at least in ILL IN is close to the same

As always "it depends" is the correct answer.

In Kansas farmers need a CDL to operate any vehicle (or combination of vehicle & trailer) over 26000 pounds Gross Vehicle RATING (doesn't matter what its tagged or actually weighs). Farmers are exempt from some logbook requirements and drug testing when operating close to home. To my understanding the exemptions only applies to OWNER OPERATORs - not employees.

To get the correct information you need to contact the STATE DOT, don't bother talking to the local court house people - learned my lesson on that a couple years ago.
