Went to a friends' place to pick up a air-tight wood stove today and found an antique 8" x 8" x 15 1/2" cement block maker in the weeds. Marking is "Automatic Action Wizerd #1". The only thing I could find on Patend is either 17 or 11, all cast iron.

I will get some pictures of it tomorrow and post. Really a neat item, think I will make a few blocks next month.

I got out bid at an auction years ago on one of those. Would have been nice to have but Dad in his infinite wisdom stopped me from bidding higher. His statement was "you can buy a lot of block, more than you'll ever need for the price of that thing".
Guess I survived just fine without it.

My dad and his cousin made ~950 10" block. They had 6 molds. By the time they mixed cement for the last one, the first would stand on its own. The building still houses a production machine shop. That was in the 1930s. JimN

I used to have one of those. they'ed quit being used by the 60's. If you needed a lot, they were too slow; if you needed a few, you could always pick them up easier than make them. Would have to be used in remote locations. The side sheet unbolts & you can put a different side sheet in there that makes sides like cut stone. Its probably lying in the weeds somewhere nearby.

I had a friend in hi school(45-48) that had a machine like that and he made lots of blocks during those years and put himself thru college with the money. He also had a 1924 dodge we rode to school in. Both were his grandfathers.
