Hi Gang;
gotta drive slow around these lanes mid afternoon - these critters take priority on the roads.
But what a wonderfull sight to see. Very rare to find a herd of Gurnseys these days where black & whites dominate the national cow herd.
Cheers David

The farm next to my house has an 80 head Guernsey herd.

They sell to a dairy that still does home delivery, and "straight runs" the milk (i.e. they don't mix it from different farms).

Fred figures their customers probably don't know what to think when they get a delivery of the rich, yellow Guernsey milk.

:D

My grampa had a Prize winning registered gurnsey he kept here and took her everywhere he and grandma lived... even had her with him on the Scholl dairy Farm in Laporte,IN... the rest of the heard was those Holstein things.

she was an old cow when she died=== was Severly injured in a tornado in 1949 when she lost her teats in the woven wire fence that rolled her up inside it... I guess It was horrible I still have grampa's registration papers for her :)

This reminds me of about a week ago when I spoted aherd of about 50 white goats walking right down the middle of a heavy traveled highway towards the intersection of US70,with help we turned them and headed them back the way they came. Havent heard where they came from or owners so far. Quite an unusual sight...

that photo brought back some memories of days long ago. when i was 8- 11 years we lived on grandpa's farm. dad did the milking with old surge buckets mostly holsteins some guernseys and some red cows maybe aryshires and milking shorthorns. being a true scott they had 5 f20 tractors.
they bought them cheap at that time.

Regrettably not many color breeds here any more either. All the dairies are in the business of producing oceans of rather low quality milk from multi thousand cow herds. Cornell teaches them to run the business that way. They are producing themselves into bankrupcy. There is way to much milk on the market and the price is at 1970's levels. To try to survive they add a thousand cows. A few Amish and Menonite farms are milking color breeds and they have a local market for "boutique" milk cheese and butter. I buy their stuff when ever I can.

I run colored breed cows on my dairy. Getting more and more every day. Of course I've only got time to milk 40-50, but I also like running my finances in the black and the Jerseys seem to help that.

Barnrat WHAT Cough Cough is that black and white doing there??? The best we could decide there had been Jerseys milked on this farm some where, (Grand dad and three sons lived on it) from 1911 until 1996, when I quit.

The black and white is actually only 3/4 holstien her daughters are all short and brown. Jerseys have been milked on my farm since it started in 2000.

There are still a lot of Jersey Herds out there, a couple close to where I live and some more a little farther, but not near as many dairy herds over all here as there were 15 years ago. There were 4 Jersey herds right here close to Ash Grove now only one, I can only think of about 5 or 6 dairy herds period. 15 years ago or 20 years about 20 herds. One friend of mine is 72 he told me the other day he is thinking about quiting.
