I have 20 acres of alfalfa/timothy hay with a good bit of clover in it. It has come in real nice this year and the neighbor wants the first and maybe second cut. He said he will do it all and I don"t have to touch it and he"ll pay $10-$12 for every 5x5 round bale he makes. I am getting ready to do some number crunching but I like to get your guys opinions. Thanks for any replies. BTW good round bales around here are about $30 and its to feed his cattle. JaredM

I guess it really depends on what's going on around you. I pay $3-5 dollars per bale for stumpage, and turn many people down on doing their hay. It costs to darn much in fuel. I even turn down offers for free hay. Come and bale it and you can have it. My neighbor even gets PAID to come and and do the hay and take it all when he leaves. This is in central MN.

I agree with the others, you are due half the retail value. With the price of hay around here that may be nearer $20 this year.

Most won't touch it for less than 80/20 out here it cost to much to cut rake and bale. Big round bales go went for $30 last year for Straw that is grass hay after they take the seed out. Of course all you do is rake and bale on those.

My neighbor sells 35 lbs square bales for $2.50 and can't get enough of them. Wasn't that long ago they went for $1.00 in the field.

Gas and all Hay is going to get expensive this year. My neighbor and I were talking this morning and crunching the numbers it will cost us about $40 a ton to cut rake and bale a ton of square bales, then you have to add in the cost of hauling if you don't sell it in the field.

The custom bailing I do I need at least half of the hay. I only do small squares and the half is figured left on the ground in the field. This year with fuel being so high half is going to be cutting it close for me, I may need to raise it to 60%.

Agree with Gary, sound like a bad deal for you. He should pay you half the retail value of the hay; or at least that is the way it is done around here. You get half the value or you get half of the hay, either way. so if a 5 X 5 round bale is worth 35 dollars, then he pays you 17.50 per bale. Tom

EX- $30 a bale purchse price I pay $15 and mow rake and bale it.

Go for $15.

That's if nobody fertilized it. If the farmer fertilized it, he gets 2/3.
