Hi, I am painting a tractor that has had oil soaked into the metal, mostly hydraulic oil if it makes a difference.

Whats a good way to prepare the metal before painting with final coat?

There is a product called metal-prep available at paint stores. It works great.

Use Brak-Clean that is what it made for to remove all oils.

wash it down with a good degreaser, then wipe with laquer thinner on rags, sand the parts well, then wipe again.

I don't think oil really "soaks" into the metal, but if there is any oil on my tractor before painting, I usually use laquer thinner on clean rags and give it a good rubdown.

I'll second that, and don't be bashful with the thinner. It'll evaporate before you can blink.

Brake cleaner works great on small parts. It will flush the dirt from sanding off. Give the part 15 minutes or more to dry after spraying.

I would use brake-clean on any rough or cast parts and thinner on smooth or sheet metal parts. If the sheet metal is pitted , use brake clean on those areas too.

Auto paint stores sell a product for cleaning the job just before painting! Removes oil, finger prints, dust or anything that might contaminate the paint. One trade name was Pre-kleano.Laquer thinner dries too fast, enamel reducer is in the family of the product mentioned above. Mineral spirits is also useful as a final wash prior to painting! Gasoline is an oil based product, which will contaminate any surface you wipe with it, prior to painting!
