Well Phooey!

5 days ago, I thought we were in for a bumper crop this year.

Frosted night before last and the wind has been blowing non-stop for four days. Turned off dry and we've just flat run out of ground moisture.

Yesterday I noticed the alfalfa turning in on itself and that wheat crop, even tho it is knee high and in the boot, looks as though it is headed for the hay baler.

So, tomorrow morning I guess I start salvaging what I can. Bummer! :>(

I feel for you!

We've had as good a wheat year as I can remember here so far. It was getting hot the past week, but we've had another inch or so just in the last few days.

Dad remembers as good of weather years (he's 78), but not when the weather panned out AND the price was up!

Curiously, out of all the gorgeous wheat around here - he was one circle that looks like 125 acres of spiky punk rock hairdo! The Russian wheat aphids have just pounded it into oblivion, but didn't affect the circle adjacent to it...

May not be much wheat left at all for those w street boys to play with? Bugs, hessian flys, more hail, freeze damage so lots of it done gone and more going now for hay and silage down here too. Some looks good and some stunted left for harvest just depending on if was under one of those clouds and got the rain in time or missed the bad stuff so far. Oh and then the guys in NE TX panhandle have other problem with a bunch gone from being under water now. Not turning out to be a good wheat year now.

We got a little rain last weekend so I am planting feed. Nobody else is started yet so I'm either real wrong or else they are. I have not forgot what "dry" is.

Howard,

How long can I let that wheat go before I have to decide wheather to hay it or not?

It's over knee high,in the boot with about an inch of beard showing. Not firing at the roots yet, but sure looks as tho it's going to just any day now because its getting darker and darker.

I pulled these upper joints at 6am this morning and they have been laying here in the office all day; the top leaves aren't curled in the field.

Oh yeah, planted in last year's alfalfa ground so it's hot soil. :>(

Thanks,

Allan

Sure changes in a hurry doesn't it. In this part of the country it seems like we're only about 3 weeks away from a drought at any time.

Yeah,

My neighbor started cutting this morning just as hard as he can go with two 16' swathers. Gotta get whats there or it will just back up into nothing.

Oh well, guess I won't have to worry about gettin' that truck ready for wheat harvest. :>)

We're still OK but haven't had much rain at all for nearly a month. Looks like a slight chance for rain nearly every day next week. Fingers crossed.
