Went in to work this afternoon, saw gas prices had gone up to $3.669! Holy cow! Was $3.349 last nite. Wonder if they are just jacking it up for the upcoming holiday weekend, or is this the ghost of things to come? That's one heckofajump, right on the heels of a couple large jumps previously

Yep prices are up and they keep on going . Does the goverment care , not in your wildest dreams . Is it realy slowen the masses down on driving only the low income as there take home pay won't take them home .Last evening i needed a weekly supply of snuff so on the way home we stopped at the on gas station that has my brand here is a guy with his BIG CrewCab duley gas burner pullen this huge boat on a triaxel trailer complaining about the fact that it now takes him 250 dollars to fill his toys so he can go play in the evening when it is nice out and from what i gathered this is a everyday when it is warm and not raining. I don't know about the rest of ya but we are tryen to cut back a bunch . my yard is only getting mowed once every two weeks now and we are going to try usen some of the older tractors that we have to see if we can cut back on the fuel used at the farm . The 1066 has been parked till needed the 706 is in the shed . Drug out the old 720 Deere diesel to try and mow hay with that is not going well does not have enough hyd. pressure to lift the John Deere haybine . going to look into that this afternoon . We are going to try my Super H on the rake and see if that will use a littel less and use the 806 on the baler rather then the 1066 .

I am starting to wish I bought a deisel engine mower for the farm. Maybe better run a electric fence round the yard and get a goat like my friend Duke. He aint mowed his lawn in years. I am glad I only have to walk 200 feet to the barn rather than drive to work.

$3.39 here in West Texas. They are saying we will see $4.00 or better by the end of July. Wonder why the U.S. Government doesn't regulate these prices, like do so many others? Maybe it is because all our politicians have stock in oil.

Gary,

Are you sure you want U.S. Government regulation of gas prices? Do you remember when the "peanut farmer" from GA did that back in the late 70's. Look what the government has done with EPA regulations, immigration regulation, minimum wage regulation, taxes, robbing the Social Security "Trust Fund", ..... ..

I'm here in oil country (Alberta) and we are paying about $1.20/litre which works out to $5.448/gallon! I better get a big tank and head on over to your neck of the woods to get me some of that cheap gas. LoL. Dave

Dave: US taxes per gallon (may not include any special city tax but supposedly includes State and Fed) are generally 35-45 cents per gal (Alaska 26.4 to Hawaii 53.5)...CAA website sez Canadian taxes are 40-50% of pump price there; is that correct??
Took a trip to Vancouver, BC, a couple years ago; the further north we drove, thru Washington, the higher the gas got...how strange...

I haven't checked the price here in NS in the past few days, but I won't argue the 1.20 per liter.
Of that buck 20, the base price of the gas is taken, then the provincial gov adds 15.5 cents per liter highway tax. The federal gov adds (I think 4 cents per liter) federal excise tax, and then there is a harmonized sales tax of 14 % added on TOP of the entire amount. The pump price you see is the full price, tax included. The taxes work out to be about 30-35% of the total.

Gas price regulation is another issue. The provincial politicians caved to the stupid masses here about a year ago as gas price became an election issue. So, in their infinite wisdom, they went ahead with gas price regulation.... where the price was set once every two weeks, and is based on the NewYork price. They've just changed this bi-weekly practice last week, and are now going to adjust it weekly. Regardless of how they do it, it's been a total, unmitigated disaster. Price regulation was supposed to slow the closure of small stations and allow the rest to make a living, while at the same time providing a stable price to the consumer. At least it's given us a stable price.... albeit about 6 cents higher than everywhere else. See, we get all the increases, and none of the decreases.
The real problem in Eastern Canada is that there are 2 refiners who work in collusion with each other right down to the distribution level. The rest of the independant distributors, wholesalers and retailers never have a chance against Esso and Irving... because they must, by necessity buy from one or the other. Until some competition develops at the refiner level, nothing will change here on price.

Dave: Remember his gallon is only 80% of yours and he is paying in USD, roughly 10% more money.

Hugh - Here is the exact conversion:

$1.20/litre x 3.78 litre/US gallon x 0.923 US$/Cdn$ = $4.19 per US gallon equivalent.

That's obscene.....but not nearly as bad as the $5.44 equivalent per gallon Dave claims!

Note: The 0.923 US/Cdn $ exchange quote is as of early this morning

Bob: It was not my intention to claim they the same, nor did I even take time to do the math as you have. There is another factor, and I'm not even going attempt this one. You folks have a lot more toll roads than we have, at least I've come across more miles of toll road state side than here in Canada. How much that will impact the formula, I can't say.

On quality, back in the early 80 my 79 Oldsmobile 403, 4 barrel would do 2 miles per imperial gallon better on New England gas than than eastern Canadian gas. My current Buick Lesabre is about the same either side of the border. today I'm burning SW Ontario and Mid west US gas.

Do you know what burns me, the auto industry makes all kinds of claims about efficiency, yet my dad's 57 Chevy 6 cylinder got precisely the same fuel milage as my 6 cylinder Buick, and I'll bet there was not 200# difference in the two cars.

In 1975 and my neighbor did these figures and both were imperial gallons. My Delta 88, 455, 4 barrel 22.9 mpg his Chevelle 305, 2 barrel 18.6 mpg. My brother bought a Chevelle about the same time, claimed he could get 23 if he spent $50. for a tume up every 2 months. My 74 and 79 Oldsmobiles were never back to the dealer for anything, warrenty or otherwise. You talk with folks buying new vehicles today, and it's run, run ,run to the dealers. Progress be damned.

Thanks for the conversion Bob M. Saves me doing it. We are paying $1.28 per litre in SW Manitoba while within sight of oil wells. Masking that conversion somewhat is the strength the Cdn $ has sahown this last two weeks. One thing we Canadians do forget when we whine about gas prices is the simple fact that Canadian gasoline (on average) seems to be better quality than US gas. I know nothing about octane and so on. I do know that our gas has a lot longer shelf life. In our travels (frequent) in the US we have always found that we cxould not drive as far on a tank of your gas. HOWEVER, when all conversions were done, yours was still a bargain. BUT our gov,t knows where to get it's money, it seems.

Yes indeed! I too have observed easier starting, improved fuel mileage, far superior shelf life, etc. when using gas purchased in Ontario.

Canadian gas even has an entirely different smell from the lousy "reformulated gas" refiners offer us here in NY state.

It has been awhile since I crossed the border at Niagra Falls but I got the impression that many Canadians entered the US to fill up on US gas and cigarettes.

I heard that the oil company only makes about 8 cents per gallon, while the government takes in the 35 to 45 cents mentioned above in taxes. I blame the enviromentalists more than anyone. We can't drill off the Florida coast cause it ruins the view, we can't drill in ANWAR, We cant build refineries cause no one wants them in their back yard, and we have tons of special additives and formulations that various states and cities require. Not to mention the cost that EPA, DNR, OSHA, etc tacks on in increased costs.

I think we are paying our dues for letting too many wacko's run things.
