I have a chance to purchase a 2010 gas burner in need of love. Are the gas motors as pathetic as the diesels?

Those tractors were bad news at the beginning and believe me they didn't get better with age.
Don't you just love the one piece sleeve sets. Aren't they a joy and priced just right... The thing is there never is any accountability. The engineers just move on and screw up the next project. Get the money and run.

I don't know what your issue is with the sleeve-deck in the 1010 and 2010s? How often do you need to change just one sleeve? Just about never happened in our shop. Truth is, with most engine jobs - you're going to change all the sleeves anyway - one at a time, or with all-four stuck together. Only problem I see - the nobody ever started making the sleeve-decks aftermarket so you have to buy from Deere. You can buy a new sleeve deck, right now of around $500 for some 1010/2010s - whereas later individual sleeve are $91 each (from Deere). The problem I experienced with all the early Deere sleeves - was the single seal - and that applies to all the next generation engines also -as used in the 350s, 450s, 1020s, 2020s, 440 and 540 skidders, etc. I worked on the 1010s and 2010s since new, and the engines were the least of their problems when setup and used properly.

I have a first year gas 2010. The only complaints I have is brakes and leaking around the PTO area. No engine problems.

Neither of the engines were all that bad. There were many things about engineering in the 1010/2010 series tractors in general that was not very good - but not necessarily the engines. What is it, exactly, that you seem to think is "pathetic" with 2010 diesels - as compared to other diesels built around the same time?
They were kind of new ground for Deere Co. - being the first Deere diesels to use rotary injection pumps - also - I think the first full size engines to use wet-sleeves (not counting older pony motors). 2010s diesels worked pretty well when setup properly. And, when the manual primer and glow -plugs were working properly, they'd outstart many newer engines in cold weather.

I worked for Deere dealer in 1960 when the 2010 came out. True the tractor was bad news to most people at the beginning, but how many things that are a advanced as the new generation tractors were with out some problems? Technology advancement means taking some risks. Deere and Co. worked hard at making things right for our customers at that time. We saw more transmission and brake problems than engine. The 2010 was built in the 1960-maybe 63 era. If the engine has survived this long, it is most likely free of bugs. After all that is over 40 years of exsistence for it. Gene Davis
