My wife wants a small shed near the house where she can put her garden stuff and I can maybe jam in one or two items that I cannot fit in elsewhere. I was thinking maybe 24 by 32 by 10 ft high and thinking of doing the work myself with one of those metal-sided packages from a lumber yard.
The question is, what do you think one of those packages would cost? I'm really out of touch on this and don't want to pay for a Morton or other building. Any ideas on price would be helpful.

It's never large enough, - I built one for the little woman just for her garden tools I thought it would keep me out of trouble as I cant put my stuff it there - It looks like an oldfashond "out-house"
Now she won't speak to me :)

The last 24x30 package I built cost $4500 for everything but concrete. That was with a 4:12 truss roof, one pedestrian door, and one 16x7 garage door.

I would suggest you look at the all steel round top quonset buildings. They come in DIY kit form in just about any size and configuration you want (I put up a 60' X 100"). A building the size you want can be erected by you and a couple buddies in two/three days (after you complete the slab). Snow/Wind loads are great. If you select the design that has 6' or so vertical side walls the interior space is almost 100% usuable. The galvalume coating on the steel ensures a long, maintenance free life and the reflective quality makes for easy lighting. After researching extensively I came to the conclusion it was the way for me to go considering total cost (site preperation, slab (contracted 6,000 square feet - 5-6" rebar and plastized re-inforcement), kit cost, and installing).

There are several companies selling/making these things and they seem to try to get very competitive for on-site delivery. I was 64 young years old when I got mine and with four guys we had a lot of fun putting it up.

By the way-rodents,termites, and bugs of all kinds seem to shy away. No rotting timbers, no painting, etc.

I got mine from SteelMasters out of one of the Carolina's.

Hope this helps. Let us know what you select. Bigger the better. Bob Farrell

I priced shed kits with Sutherlands, then I found a builder that could put the shed up for the same money. His crew showed up at 3 in the afternoon on a Saturday and finished a 30x40 shed by noon Sunday. It won't be mistaken for a Morton Building, but in three years it hasn't shown any signs of poor workmanship.

Paid for half when they delivered the materials and paid the other half when it was put up.

Most lumberyard chains will have a price list of stock building kits on hand and will gladly price out anything special you want. I got my pole barn kit from Carter Lumber and I've been pretty happy with it. I haven't checked prices lately, but they did go up a bunch when plywood and steel prices shot up. I suggest that you price it both with steel siding and T1-11 plywood siding; when steel prices high and plywood prices back down, plywood siding may be an attractive choice.

From what I see in papers etc. Your looking at $4000-6000 if not more and you do the work. I don't know how good or bad they are since I build all my building from salvage stuff so the cost is very low. I have a hay barn that I have been working on and will have less then $500 in it when done

If you have room make it twice that big and it will still be to small.

Thanks for good advice in reply to flying belgian, 05-20-2007 18:17:10
Actually, Carter Lumber is the one I will likely buy and I will look into T-111. I used it in the past adn it worked out OK.
I do know about bigger is better in barns and have built plenty over the years. I'm trying to semi-retire at present so trying to keep a lid on things. As you know, it is very difficult to get this farm thing out of one's system. Thanks.
